Thelma Ruth Curry

1931 - 2024

Thelma Ruth Curry passed away peacefully in her home on May 27, 2024 after a long battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) at the age of 92 1/2 . Her sense of humor lasted until the end. When people asked how old she was the last couple of years, she would include the half year in her age. If someone made a comment about it, she would laugh and respond with, "I earned that half of a year!" On her most difficult days, she would lighten the mood by referencing Laurel and Hardy by saying, "Fine mess I've gotten myself into this time."Thelma was born in a small town in Oklahoma on Nov. 1, 1931. Thelma and her late husband, Eddie Curry, moved to San Diego over 50 years ago and were both dedicated and loyal Padres fans who attended or watched almost every baseball game for decades. She was an avid card player, loved music, dancing (especially country western line dancing), traveling, and was a great storyteller. She had a passion for helping people, which was evidenced by her long-time nursing career and was quick-witted with an amazing ability to tell jokes. She always put her family first and did whatever it took to help however she could as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Thelma was preceded in death by her daughter (Jeannie Curry), three grandchildren (Chad Curry, Sherman Dixon, and Tabatha Dixon) and one great-grandson (Tony Gadberry). She is survived by her two daughters (Sherrie Dixon and Gail Curry), her son (Gene Curry), four grandchildren (Ollie Dixon, Leslie Schulze, Becki Carlson, and Steven Carlson), and six great-grandchilden (Chris and Cam Dixon, Leilani and Jocelyn Schulze, and Sean-Liam and Evelyn Gadberry). Her wisdom, resilience, humbleness, kindness and generosity will live on through those who loved and cherished her. We will always remember her positive attitude, fighting spirit to never give up, sassiness, strength, love, and sense of humor. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. A celebration of Thelma's life will be held as a graveside service at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego, CA 92121, on Fri., July 26, 2024, at 11am.
