Timothy Daly Obituary

Timothy Patrick Daly
February 19, 1954 - July 27, 2021
Berkeley
Tim passed peacefully after a brief illness. His beloved Mary was at his side.Tim was the fourth of five children of Tom and Mary Daly. He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by sister Mary Jo(George), James(Donna) ,Terrance(Rachel), and Mark(Lynn). He was the proud Uncle of 11 nephews and nieces, and 8 great nephews and nieces.Tim was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Chula Vista, California. He attended St. Charles Elementary and Marian High School, both in Imperial Beach. In high school, Tim excelled on the basketball court and in track and field, with high jump and pole vault as his specialties. He showed a restless spirit and a love for adventure as a young man. One summer, as a young teen Tim decided he wanted to spend more time at the beach. With no other way to get there, Tim decided he and his little brother would hitchhike. The two spent the entire summer at the beach. He enjoyed surfing and all other water activities. On a trip to visit his cousins in Iowa, Tim organized a rafting trip on a local river. There was resistance from the adults, but that didn't stop a determined Tim from fulfilling his river adventure.Shortly before graduating from high school Tim was involved in an automobile accident that left him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. However, his independent and adventurous spirit knew no confines. After his rehabilitation, Tim set out to finish his education and live life on his terms. He enrolled in the Disabled Students Program at The University of California, Berkeley. He was in the pioneering class of the program. He would go on to mentor many of the succeeding generations of disabled students. He studied History with an emphasis on folklore, which reflected his love for folk and bluegrass music. He spent fall afternoons at Memorial Stadium watching his beloved Golden Bear Football team.Tim was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. He recorded extensive research on the Daly and Feeney family trees and origins. It was at this time in his life that Tim met Mary O'Sullivan, his long -time companion and soulmate. Their many adventures included hiking in Yosemite National Park, boating on San Francisco Bay, bird watching, cruising to Alaska and Hawaii and train trips to Arizona, to name just a few. Tim had a way to make any activity an adventure. With Mary at his side, Tim lived a happy, fulfilled life.Services will be held August 7th at 4p.m; at Newman Holy Spirit Parish 2700 Dwight Way, Berkeley, CA 94704.

Mary,
My sincere sympathies. Tim and my dear brother BIll shared a Berkeley home together many years ago. I had a nice talk with Tim last year regarding their shared experiences and friendship.
On several occasions, Tim was kind enough to lend us his van so that we could take Bill to places inaccessible by public transportation. My mate Rick's cowrkr Karen was a neighbor of Tims in the 80s.
I am happy to read of Tim's very full life and hope you find comfort in special memories.

Tim taught me to embrace adventure! We had so many. Bike rides to Coronado, exploring the Hotel Del, Shakespeare in the Park, finding the longest distance between San Diego and Berkeley in a mail truck, Yosemite, our family of friends on Elsworth, Tom preparing a Thanksgiving feast for the entire home (freshly ground cranberries included), enjoying folk and bluegrass with Jim and Terry, and so many more beautiful memories. I am grateful. Namaste my friend.

I knew Tim from 1st grade at St Charles through Marian High. Many hours were spent after school being kids. My thoughts and prayers to the Daly family. It was an honor to know him.

Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed, and very dear.

Sending love and prayers to the Daly family.

Dear Mark and family, I am saddened to see the passing of Tim. I remember him as a very cool, classy guy. He was my personal chaperone on the day us 8th graders toured MHS. I will keep all of you in my prayers. God bless, Vince

The Dalys were a wonderful family down the street from us and my memories of times with Tim are all great; relaxing on the high jump pits after track workouts, camping in the Cleveland National Forest, taking a canoe down the Colorado from Blythe to Winterhaven for Easter vacation in '72. Visits with him and Mary in Berkeley were always an enjoyable part of the plan when we were in the area. We're blessed to have known someone of such great character.
