William Emory Root

Bill was born and raised in San Diego, CA, where he attended Grossmont High School. He married the love of his life Maryjo Watts on August 19th, 1967 who continued to love and care for him till the end.He enlisted in the Marine Corp where he served his country bravely in Vietnam from 1964-1967 followed by two more years in the Reserves. Mr. Root was selflessly dedicated to his comrades in arms. While on active duty in Vietnam, he fought for his countrymen. During his retirement years illness forced him into action, again. After being denied life-saving access to care both inside and outside the VA, he went into action. Mr. Root worked with the media, local and state representatives, and a whistleblowing RN from San Antonio. His relentless efforts helped to propel a law forward that would guarantee access to transplantation for ALL Veterans around the United States. He was blessed with a new set of lungs in 2020 and continued to be a champion for veterans' health rights as well as a mentor for veterans and other lung transplant recipients to the very end.He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who took joy in each and every moment he was able to be present in the lives of his loved ones. He was an amazing chef, and a constant loyal friend to all.Bill is survived by his loving wife Maryjo, his two brothers Skip and Patrick, his daughters Kirschten and Kourtney, his two sons-in-law, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
