Bruce Whitcher Obituary

Bruce Lyman Whitcher, D.D.S., accomplished oral surgeon of Templeton, California, died August 7, 2025, in an automobile accident. He was 75.

Bruce was born in Buffalo, New York, to Dr. Charles E. Whitcher, a native of Los Olivos, California, and Sylvia Bennett (née Lyman) Whitcher of Buffalo, New York. Upon his father's completion of medical school and service in the U.S. Army, the family moved to North Carolina, where his father pursued training in anesthesiology at Duke University. Bruce was soon joined by a sister, Sarah, and two brothers, David and Douglas. His childhood was one of barefoot summers among snakes, toads, and shady creeks in the beautiful countryside of western North Carolina.

In 1962, the family moved to California when his father was recruited to join the faculty of Stanford University as a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology. Living on the Stanford campus as a teen, Bruce was able to explore many interests: saxophone, electronics (ham radio), and anything with a motor-especially motorcycles. He attended The Cate School in Carpinteria and Stanford University. Upon graduating with a B.A. in English, he held many jobs, his favorite of which was driving a tow truck. In his early 20s, he returned to Stanford to do graduate work in chemistry. He graduated from dental school at the University of California, San Francisco, where he excelled. He continued on to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Harbor–UCLA, followed by a memorable year-long fellowship in North Wales with his new wife, Deedle.

In 1987, Bruce joined the oral surgery practice of Dr. Ronald B. Mead in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, where he truly found his calling. He was devoted to his patients, partners, and beloved staff of Central Coast Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for 35 years. He held deep respect for his dental colleagues across the Central Coast and felt it was an honor to practice alongside them.

Beyond his private practice, Bruce was a dedicated advocate for patient safety in his chosen profession at the local, state, and national levels. He was appointed by Governors Schwarzenegger and Brown to the Dental Board of California, serving as its president twice. He also served as president of the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and as an examiner on the Board of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was a board member of the California Dental Society of Anesthesiology and a lifelong member of the Central Coast Dental Society. Until his passing, he was Director of the Noor Dental Clinic in San Luis Obispo. Bruce's passion for quality in dental assisting and safety in the administration of dental anesthesia made significant contributions to the field.

Bruce was a lifelong motorcyclist and later an advocate for off-road trail access throughout the state of California. He was just as likely to be found taking a shovel to trails as he was writing grant applications to raise funds for trail maintenance. He was a tireless volunteer for the U.S. Forest Service, especially in the Pozo–La Panza area of Los Padres National Forest, and a dedicated member of the Central Coast Motorcycle Association. This labor of love led to the construction of new trails, new campgrounds, and the preservation of trail access for years to come. Many of his deepest friendships were forged over the years with his collaborators in the off-road world.

His family life was always his highest priority, and raising his two sons was his deepest joy. He will be dearly missed by his wife and sons, Gregory (Elena) and Emmett (Casie), as well as by extended family in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; Napa and Davis, California; and Zurich, Switzerland. A private memorial gathering will be held in Templeton in the near future.

Bruce Whitcher is a man I admired in so many ways. When I think of him at the dinner table with Deedle and the boys, I see the contented smile on his face and I recall the respect the family members had for each other. They talked about real things at the table and were able to laugh together. Such a pleasure to dine with them. On the professional side, he was a fully realized man in both his professional life and volunteer work. A kind and caring man and a good friend to so many. We will all miss him.

Dr. Whitcher was my oral surgeon back in the day. Very knowledgeable and very professional. I will miss his sense of humor and his compassion for the clients he served. God Speed to you Dr. W, may our heavenly father surround you with open arms, and to your family and co-workers and friends and patients. You will be missed.
