David Grant Obituary

David Grant David Charles Grant, Jr., 96, passed away September 24, 2015, at Graceful Living, Arroyo Grande. Dave grew up in a small Connecticut village, attended Yale University, and joined the U.S. Navy in February 1944, serving as Aviation Electronic Technician Mate on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. He was involved with the development of specialized long distance radar equipment. After the war he continued Naval service at the Bikini Islands. While working at Chance Vought Aircraft, he met his wife Terry. Dave's lifetime of engineering work in the aerospace industry included early research on laser technology and astro- navigational systems. In 1975, he and Terry moved to California where he worked at Litton Industries until retirement. Dave's bright blue eyes and infectious smile charmed all who met him. Picnics, canoeing and camping were favorite family activities, and he was active in his sons' Boy Scout troops. Always a fix-it guy, he enjoyed house and yard projects. With Terry, he was an avid sailor and their early retirement included RV trips all over the USA. A member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Dave served on many committees, and fixed electronic donations at the Thrift Shop for 13 years. He believed in working hard, being an active community member and helping others in practical ways. Dave is survived by his wife Norma "Terry"; sons Timothy, Robert, and Jonathan and his wife Eileen Braheney and their daughter Abaigeal; and daughter Nancy and her husband Birrell Walsh. His family expresses special thanks to Jennifer Lopes and her wonderful staff at Graceful Living, who provided cheerful and skillful care with kind affection for David. Dave's memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, October 18, 2015 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 301 Trinity Avenue, Arroyo Grande. Memorial donations may be made to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
