David Romero Obituary
September 13, 1928 - March 17, 2022
San Luis Obispo, California - David Frank Romero passed peacefully from his earthly home to his heavenly home at 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 17, 2022.
Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he married Mary Belle in 1951 while serving in the Coast and Geodetic Survey, and settled in San Luis Obispo in 1956, where they raised their three children.
Dave served as City Engineer and Director of Public Works from 1956 – 1992. He then served on the City Council for 16 years, eight of those as mayor.
Dave enjoyed skiing, backpacking, camping and playing guitar, sharing those adventures with family and friends.
Preceded in death by Mary Belle and their son, Bruce, Dave is survived by his daughters Cathie Babb and Teresa Bruce, ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service is planned at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 30 at Grace Church in San Luis Obispo. Please wear purple (his favorite color).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Visiting Angels of San Luis Obispo (non-deductible). Please designate your donation in memory of Dave Romero to provide support for those who cannot afford care.

Dave was truly a town icon. San Luis Obispo is a better place thanks to his efforts. My favorite memory of him is playing guitar at the Newman Center in Cal Poly back in the sixties with Dave. He thoroughly enjoyed strumming his six string and leading the congregation in song. He would get so excited to learn a new song and find a new picking pattern. His zest for life is sorely missed. I offer my deepest condolences to the Romero family.

What a loss. Dave was a great person a wonderful mayor who really listened to his people. He was caring and logical. We could use him now. RIP Dave. Your name always brought a smile

Working with Dave on many special events, he was always kind with great solutions . I will forever remember his smile . He was a wonderful person to work with.

Thank you Dave Romero for help making San Luis Obispo the special place it is today from planting the trees downtown to helping establish the Mission Plaza you were a main figure in the city planning from the 1960´s thru your time on the City council and being the mayor in the city of San Luis Obispo.
Thank you for your years of community service and making San Luis Obispo a special place to grow up in.
