September 7, 1926 - March 9, 2022
San Luis Obispo, California - Don died at his family home in San Luis Obispo, CA after a long illness which he bore with characteristic stoicism.
The family would like to thank Central Coast Hospice for their unwavering care and support. Among others Claudia, Rodger and Izella were the team who were there for us to the end. Thank you all so much.
A memorial service will be held at the Reis Family Funeral Home chapel, Nipomo St, San Luis Obispo on Friday April 8 at 3.30pm. for family and friends.
Donations in Don's memory can be made to Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, St Jude Childrens Research Hospital or the charity of your choice.

Dr. Pinkel was an amazing scientist and an incredible human being. I first got to know him when we taught medical mycology together at Cal Poly. He was so enormously accomplished with his incredible work at St Jude's yet so humble. I was fascinated when I read the article the Smithsonian did on him some years ago. The students at Cal Poly thought he was a wonderful human being as well. His family, colleagues and friends are so fortunate to have had him in their lives. I'll never forget him.

I was saddened to learn of Dr Pinkel's passing from Michael when I got home from work. I have known Dr Pinkel since Michael was my first boyfriend at West University Elementary. He was a kind and a caring person. I last saw him when he, Michael and his wife were getting ready to move to San Luis Obispo, California when I was in high school. Rest in Peace Dr Pinkel!
