Douglas "Jared" Meek Our beautiful and tender son, Douglas "Jared" Meek, left this earth life on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at the age of 34 from a drug overdose - the demon he fought for the past ten years. He was born the first child to parents who joyfully awaited his arrival on November 1, 1982, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Raised in Templeton with his sister, Bronwyn, he enjoyed all the things a boy could--whether it be riding motorcycles or horses or catching frogs in the creek. A solid student who could express himself so well both verbally and in writing, his love and passion was sports. A beautiful skier, a talented golfer, he excelled at baseball and attended college on a baseball scholarship. He attained his Eagle Scout award and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lincoln, Nebraska. Jared was a friend to all and sought out the downtrodden. He had an innate ability to lift and encourage. He loved to hug. There was light and tenderness in his demeanor and he had a beautiful laugh. His quick memory allowed him to play , "What movie did this line come from?" with his sister. Music was his solace as he tried to calm the turbulent waters within his mind. Jared faced trials beyond imagination in his short life. Tourette Syndrome, childhood trauma, and severe health issues over the years tore at his ability to withstand them all. He battled every day--if not every hour--of his life. He wanted to live and partake of all the things this life offered. Jared was in and out of recovery for the last ten years. He loved being the voice of recovery and his last night was spent helping someone who was new to recovery. The disease of addiction made the decision for him and he lost the battle. Our very souls are crushed; his absence in our family is felt so painfully. We will miss him every day until we can hold him in our arms again. But ours is an eternal family and we take solace in the knowledge that Jared, now released from bitter trials, is experiencing the joy and peace that evaded him in this life. His mother Brooke, father Brent, grandmother Pam, sister Bronwyn, brother-in-law Jake, nieces Dillan and Penny, as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins and dear friends (especially his recovery family) will remember Jared on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Atascadero Chapel.
