Evelyn Galaudet Obituary
Evelyn Galaudet
March 1, 1926 - November 27, 2022
Oakland, California - Evelyn passed away quietly on Nov 27, at the age of 96, with her daughter Jaime by her side. Evelyn lived a full and caring life as an educator, business woman, engineer and beloved mother, grand and great-grandmother. She was involved in many groups and organizations her entire life. Just to name a few, she was PTA President several times, a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout and Brownie Troop Leader, a Rainbow Girl, Job's Daughter, was Worthy Matron and Deputy Grand Matron in Eastern Star and President of the Morro Bay Women's Club. More recently she was selected President of the Residents Assoc. of her assisted living facility, Watermark By The Bay, where she advocated for a Christmas Party for the residents and a Christmas bonus for the employees. She was a wonderful bridge player, an avid Giants fan and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles when someone would read her the clues after her eyesight failed. She would often do them over the phone when family couldn't visit her during COVID restrictions.
Evelyn was born in LA, moved to Tulare, CA at age 7 with her family. She graduated with Honors from Tulare High School and earned a full ride Mechanical Engineering scholarship to Stanford University at age 16. She left college in June 1943 to join the war effort, went to work for Joshua Hendly Iron Works designing marine turbine engines under a high security clearance.
After the war, she returned to the valley and got a job teaching 4th and 5th grade in Earlimart, CA. After the school year, she followed her engineering passion and worked at Hamilton Air Force base in Marin County as an engineer working on specs for aircraft part repairs until the end of 1946. When her eyes began to fail due to the meticulous fine drafting requirements, she needed to change careers. She found employment immediately as an accountant/office manager for the next decade for four different companies until she was hired in 1961 as a teacher at Our Lady of Victory just 3 days before the school year started. Monsignor told her "You are the answer to our prayers". After the first day, she wasn't so sure. It was supposed to be only a one year position but lasted 10 years. In 1971, she was hired by Martin Ranches as a payroll clerk (for 500 regular employees plus another 1,000 during harvest). Martin Ranches was an agricultural conglomerate. In 1975, she became the office manager and held that position for the next three decades. The last 10 years of which she worked in Cayucos while taking care of her mother, Mamie.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents John and Mamie Maryfield and her older sister Vivian. She is survived by her three children Randy Davis, Rick Galaudet and Jaime Sheridan along with six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Evelyn requested, in lieu of flowers, that gifts be made to your own favorite charities and maybe a little extra for those that wait on you in cafes and restaurants and care givers.
There will be a service for Evelyn at 3 pm on December 17, at the Reis Family Mortuary, 991 Nipomo St., SLO.
