Fred Campbell Obituary

Fred Campbell

August 13, 1934 - April 18, 2025

Nipomo, California - Fred Douglas Campbell passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, in Santa Maria, California. He was born on August 13, 1934, in Hanford, California, to John Duncan Campbell and Thera May Mobus Campbell.

When Fred was just one year old, his family relocated to San Luis Obispo, California, where he spent his formative years. He grew up in CA alongside his siblings: John Duncan Campbell Jr., born January 1, 1937; William Donald Campbell, born July 5, 1938; and Patricia Lorraine Campbell, born February 27, 1946. His siblings preceded him in death. He attended public schools and graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1952. He enrolled at Cal Poly in the fall of 1952 and received his BS in Electrical Engineering in June 1956.

Fred married Betty Carol Masters on June 19, 1955. They were planning to celebrate 70 years of marriage on June 19, 2025.

Throughout his life, Fred remained closely connected to his roots in San Luis Obispo. His journey through life was marked by the enduring bonds of family and the memories created with those who knew him.

Fred was a man with many interests. He became a pilot and flew his family to Boston, Washington State, Arizona. Betty took flying lessons and became his copilot.

Fred had a deep interest in being able to help others. He obtained his MA in counseling psychology and spent many volunteer hours trying to help others.

Fred had his Extra license as a HAM Radio operator WB6MIA. Betty also joined him in this hobby and earned her Technician HAM license. Fred and Betty were active members of the San Luis Obispo Emergency Communications Council (SLOECC).

Fred loved to travel and he and Betty traveled the world, visiting at least fifty countries, several more than once.

A public service will be held to honor Fred's life on May 31, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Canyonhills Church, 25 Cerro Romauldo, San Luis Obispo, CA. He considered this his life long church as he attended with his parents and siblings as a child. May his memory bring comfort to all who were touched by his presence.

Fred is survived by his wife (Betty) of 69 years, his son Fred (Douglas) Campbell, Jr. daughters Cynthia Carol Campbell Roberts (Cindy), and Penny Sue Campbell Jolly (Thomas).

Fred is survived by five grandchildren, Kiri Jolly of Santa Cruz, CA, Brittany Jolly Stein (Ken), of Port Orchard, Washington, Dillon Travis Roberts, Denice Bilal Campbell and Duncan Bruwin Campbell. Fred was considered an "adoptive" grandfather to Glad Tinda Newell (Jeremy) whom he sponsored as a student from Malaysia. He loved all of his family very much.
