Hubert Lowman Obituary

Hubert A. Lowman, 93, of Arroyo Grande died Dec. 11, 2006. He began his career as a commercial artist and married Martha Guynn Howard in 1939. They were married 51 years until her death. During World War II he worked in the Kaiser shipyards. After the war Hubert had a long career as a freelance scenic photographer and publisher. His work appeared in Arizona Highways, Desert Magazine, Sunset and many others. Thousands of his photographs were made into postcards for such locations as Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. In 1978 he and Martha moved to the Huasna Valley.

In 1946 Hubert began taking photographs of California's Spanish Missions. This interest grew into Lowman Publishing Company, one of the oldest and largest producers and distributors of mission souvenirs. He was active in the business until his death.

Hubert was an elder, deacon and choir member at First Presbyterian Church of Grover Beach. He was also active in Sons of the American Revolution.

Hubert and Martha had two sons, Edward Lowman, who died in 2004 in Atascadero, and Robert Lowman of Chapel Hill, N.C. Hubert remarried in 1992. He is survived by his wife Elsie of Arroyo Grande and four grandchildren, Janet and Evan Lowman of Arroyo Grande and Sarah Lowman Shafarenko and Amy Lowman of North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, First Presbyterian Church of Grover Beach.
