Ivan Ulz Obituary

Ivan Robert Ulz Guns were booming over Stalingrad. Meanwhile, on May 4, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, a baby boy was born. Ivan Robert Ulz was the only son of Frank Ulz and Connie Grike. He grew up in North Hollywood, living and working in the nursery school that his parents owned. Ulz wrote his first song while still in high school. "A Letter to Hayley" was released by LarBell as a 45 rpm single in 1962, with a then-unknown Glenn Campbell playing guitar and Ivan himself performing the vocals as teen idol Billy Kidd. Ulz went on to collaborate with musical legends Lowell George, Hoyt Axton, Jackson Browne, Rickie Lee Jones, Roy Estrada, Steven Mann, Gene Clark, Dick Rosmini, and poet Rod McKuen, to name a few. His only album for adults, "Ivan the Ice Cream Man," was released by Stanyan Records in 1970. In 1980, Ulz moved to New York City and began working with children. He released "Songs from the Old School" on his own label in 1999, featuring the world-famous Fire Truck song, later published as an illustrated storybook. In the mid-1990s Ivan created an alter-ego radio personality, Treasure Ivan, on Excellent Radio, broadcasting vintage children's records and reading stories over the low power station out of Grover Beach, CA. Treasure Ivan would prove an enduring character, becoming the creative focus of his final years. Ulz retired to Halcyon, California in 2012 with Eva, his fourth wife and radio producer, Tiny Frank the rabbit, and Pepito the canary. His last song, "It's a Bi-Polar World," spoke of his lifelong struggle with mental illneess. Ivan left this life on October 5, 2017. He is beginning to find his way. A celebration of Ulz's life and creative legacy will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 10, 2018, in the Temple of the People. Donations to support the new reincarnation of Excellent Radio, birthplace of Treasure Ivan, can be made in Ivan's memory through the United Way of San Luis Obispo County to their Five Cities Low Power FM Radio fund.

We met Ivan in Washington sq park playground when my kids were toddlers. He put on an impromptu concert for the city kids. We were instant fans and saw him play at a library soon after. He was a wonderfully kind person, and we loved his music!

Ivan was my friend. We taught together in NYC and listened to old radio shows and went to the Russian baths. I miss him. And we both loved Lenny Bruce.

My son, who is 3 years old, loves Ivan´s music! Fire truck, the carrot song and the lollipop tree! We sign them in the car or while I take him on my runs. I remember the first time I heard Ivan´s Fire truck song(10 years ago) while at a daddy and me class. That song stuck to me because I liked it! RIP Ivan. Know that Micah and I are happily singing your songs every day!

At my door the leaves are falling
A cold wild wind will come
Sweethearts walk by together
And I still miss someone

I was Ivan's psychotherapist... And he was an amazing man with a history of being misunderstood by the doctors who treated him. Ivan wasn't bi polar. He was By Ivan> Love to you brother. My heart is forever connected to yours.

I am only just finding out about Ivan's passing. He was my co-teacher in the 1980's at The Children's Energy Center, and my model for how to integrate joyful, life-affirming music into every single aspect of the preschoolers' day. Teaching with Ivan was a joy and an adventure. The last time I sang "Don't You Push Me Down" with him, we sang it for Woody Guthrie's daughter when The Children's Music Network was honoring her dad. Jammin' in Heaven got a big boost when you showed up, my friend.

The sweetest guy who always had time for his fans. His song fire truck helps kids get started on singing and once they hear they're in love with music... I love him and enjoyed our time together in the city. Last I recently started listening to his last album and with the children I teach the magic returns with 3 billy goats gruff and the pickle song.

Ivan was a wonderful man who was willing to share his talents with the children of the world. We enjoyed taking our grandchildren to see him and loved it when he would entertain the library. He was always willing to drop by a local pre-school and spin his magic. He will be missed but we all will remember his "Fire Truck Song" with children and adults singing with him. RIP Ivan you will be missed, such good memories of such a good and gentle man.
