James Conway Obituary

James R. "Jim" Conway, brother, uncle, educator, and friend, died in Cayucos, California, on November 4th, 2025. Jim was a steady presence in the communities he lived in and worked in, and he will be remembered for his curiosity, dry humor, and the ease with which he connected with people. As a lifelong Dodgers fan, he was able to enjoy watching them win the World Series in his final days. A devoted member of his community and a lifelong champion of curiosity, kindness, and learning, Jim leaves behind a legacy that touched countless lives.

Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cheryl Conway; his brother, Mark Conway; and his parents, Mark and Dorothy Conway. He is survived by his brother, Jack Conway; his nephew, Walter Russell; and his niece, Rhiannon Russell, who will forever remember his warmth, humor, and generosity.

Born and raised in Los Angeles alongside his brothers Mark and Jack, Jim showed an early passion for knowledge and communication. He went on to earn his Ph.D. and dedicated much of his life to academia. At Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he served as a respected professor before eventually becoming the head of the Communications Department. Jim was known for his creative teaching style, quick wit, and heartfelt mentorship. Among his many students was "Weird Al" Yankovic, who once wrote a playful parody song inspired by Jim-an anecdote Jim shared fondly throughout his life.

Jim also possessed an unforgettable laugh-rich, booming, and instantly recognizable. A devoted supporter of the performing arts, he could often be found in theaters throughout the Central Coast, cheering on local performers. His laugh was so infectious that it regularly rippled through the audience.

Beyond his professional accomplishments and his love for the arts, Jim was deeply charitable, always seeking ways to support others quietly and meaningfully. His kindness stretched far beyond the classroom, and he was admired by friends and strangers alike for his generosity of spirit.

Jim leaves behind many people who learned from him, leaned on him, or laughed with him. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Café Roma, 1020 Railroad Ave, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, on January 17th, 2026, at 3 p.m.

Jim will be missed by those that he touched with his wit, generosity and knowledge. He is now at peace with no physical pain and the pain of missing Cheryl, who he is now with for eternity. Rest in peace, Jim.

Dr. Conway was one of my favorite Communications Professors at Cal Poly. He was kind and I enjoyed his sense of humor. He was my academic advisor and very generous with his time and expertise. My condolences to his family.

In addition to all his wonderful qualities as a compassionate human being, Jim was an activist for workers rights. He devoted many years of his life to serve Cal Poly faculty as a trusted union activist. He will be remembered as a champion by many faculty he helped.
