John Fitch Obituary

We bid farewell to a cherished husband, well-loved father, proud grandfather and valued friend. John Fitch, 81, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at his home in Morro Bay, with his wife of 46 years, Sharon, and daughter, Lisa, holding his hands. John was a quality person who had a lasting impact on all the brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews in the Fitch and Baker families. He had bravely lived with cancer for three and a half years.  John was born in Rochester, N.Y., and came to California as a young boy, having lived in Eagle Rock and Berkeley, before settling in Fresno. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant j.g. in the Submarine Service. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended law school at the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall.  His first job, after having received his law degree, was as an eminent domain trial attorney for the PG&E Law Department in San Francisco. He moved to Fresno in 1964 and had a 16-year career in private practice, eventually specializing in Family Law. In 1980, he was appointed Judge of the Superior Court of Fresno County, where he remained for 20 years, having served as a trial judge as well as special assignments in Juvenile, Family Law and Probate Courts.  John was compassionate and motivated to help the underserved and marginalized persons in the Fresno community, both as a lawyer and a judge. Throughout his legal career, he was a respected colleague, friend and a mentor to many, and was known for his courtesy and fairness. When John and Sharon retired to Morro Bay in 2001, one of his favorite pastimes was walking his little Chihuahua, Daisy, on the beach at Morro Rock. He loved animals and had a special fondness for his dogs. Throughout his life, John was a consummate learner with many and varied interests. Whether it was gardening, baking, Chinese cooking, scuba diving, raising chickens and beef, beekeeping, photography, fishing, making pottery or playing chess, when he developed an interest in something, he studied and found out everything he could about it, always striving for perfection.  John was an avid reader and a great storyteller. Not only did he love to learn, he loved to teach. He shared his knowledge in many ways, including as a teacher at San Joaquin College of Law. John was a fine and good man who will be missed by many. It was his wish that no service be held.

Judge Fitch was on the submarine Segundo 1957-1959. I was on the Segundo 1962-1966. Although I never met him a lot of the crew did remember him.. He was well liked and respected by the crew. "SAILOR, REST YOUR OAR"

I've known John (and Sharon) for 10+ years as a neighbor sharing a common wall in Morro Bay. What a wonderful man to know and share ideas with, and to enjoy the contributions he made to our condo community over the years. I feel blessed to know that a touch of his spirit will always be a part of my heart and memory.

John was a wonderful attorney and judge. When I came to Fresno in 1973 as a new attorney with Fresno County Legal Services, John was one of the very few attorneys in town that would do a divorce case for a poor person for free or for a very low fee. He was doing pro bono legal work before it gained support from the State Bar. Always a gentleman, he will be missed. My condolences to his loving wife, Sharon, and daughter, Lisa. Attached is a photograph I took of John in 1983 at the Fresno County Bar Association's informal Judges' Dinner held in June each year at Bob Crossland's barn.

John Fitch is my uncle. I loved him so much words can't describe. My mother and I lived with my Auntie Sharon and Uncle John when my dad got a job in LA when I was a baby/kid. I have always had a special love for my uncle and I can't even describe how hard it will be for me not seeing him on anymore. He was an amazing man, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He will never be forgotten I love you Uncle John. RIP

I was in Judge Oliver's Probate Court this morning and Judge recognized John's passing to all present as one of the finest to serve on the Bench of Fresno County. He was missed when he retired and sorely missed by all who knew him at his passing. My sincere sympathy to the family. Paulette Janian

I remember; after working for Judge Fitch, and previously knowing him as an attorney--taking my five-month old son downtown to visit with former coworkers. Judge was kind enough to take me and my son to lunch; which thankfully my son slept through. After lunch, Judge walked me to my car to help with stroller, etc. As we know his love for children, he picked up my sleeping baby to put him in his car seat and afterward we noticed my son had soiled his diaper AND JUDGE's suit jacket. I could have died, but Judge said not too worry. Just one memory; I have many more of both he and Sharon--always loving, kind and fun. God bless.
