San Luis Obispo, California - Joseph Alston Hix Jr born March 25, 1926, in Union South Carolina passed away December 27, 2021, at home from natural causes. He was 95.
Alston, as he was known to everyone, was drafted into the Army in 1944 and served in the 3rd infantry division as an "infantry scout" during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries incurred when a tank he and his buddies were riding on was hit and blown off a bridge.
After the war Alston moved to San Luis Obispo and worked for his aunts Sally and Pat who ran the old Gabby Book Store. During this time, he began participating in the local Little Theatre where he pursued his dream of becoming an actor. In 1953 he met Elenor Snyder, also a thespian and they were married in June of that year.
Alston retired from the Title Insurance Company where he served as a Title Officer for over 25 years.
Acting was his passion in the early years, his grandchildren his passion later in life.
Alston and Ele celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in June of 2021.
He is survived by wife Ele and three children Joseph Hix (Shirley) of North Las Vegas, Margaret Gin(Bobby) of Santa Barbara, and Patrick Hix(Miriam) of San Luis Obispo, Five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A private service was held on January 3, 2022 at Reis Chapel

Our condolences on your loss. We hope memories of all the good times cushion the pain.
Susan worked at the Gabby Bookstore too until it closed. She is still friends with Mary Howell, the last owner who succeeded her owner parents. Love the SLO connections.
