Mel Queen Obituary

Mel had all intentions of reporting to the Toronto Blue Jays'' 2011 spring training camp for what would have been his nearly half century in professional baseball, but instead, he battled cancer bravely for five months and succumbed Thursday, May 12, 2011. Mel''s life started in March 1942 in Johnson City, N.Y. He was born into baseball - his father was a pitcher for the New York Yankees and Pittsburg Pirates in the late 30s and early 40s. Mel graduated from San Luis Obipso High School in 1960. He was named CIF Player of the Year in 1959 and 60. He was signed by the Cincinnati Red''s for his hitting and outfield abilities and became a pitcher in 1964. In 1970, he was traded to the California Angels. After seriously injuring his arm, he retired in 1972. Mel could never leave baseball, so he signed on with the Cleveland Indians and started his coaching career, which saw assignments with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers and Toronto Blue Jays. Mel''s heart was with the Blue Jays, where he was a major league pitching coach, Director of Player Development, and interim manager. He was proud to be part of three Cy Young Awards and the back-to-back World Series Championships in 1992 and 1993. He was the Senior Consultant to Player Development for the Jays at the time of his death and he leaves behind a long and rich history of baseball. To all of us, he was a wonderful man, "Dad, Papa or Uncle Mel," who had five decades of the most outrageous stories, from bass fishing in the Delta and alligator ponds in Florida to all of he old baseball parks, big leagues and minor leagues, and even a hi-hjacking in Cuba along the way. He would sit and watch us play baseball in the front yaerd and would coach with the intensity of the seventh game of a World Serices our own "dodge baseball." Mel was a part of a large loving family, who was with him until the end. The Queen family would like to recognize and thank Dr. Thomas Spillane, who entered into a valiant fight for Mel''s life, and Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, who lovingly helped him along on his final journey. Mel is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Gail; sons Jason and Christopher; daughter, Shirlee (Doug Spang); and nine grandchildren, who, in Mel''s proud words "made up their own baseball team:" Austin, Tanner, Rocky, Hanna, Carson, Jack, Ruby, Ben and Wyatt. Mel''s heart held so many memories and so many special people - one of the most treasured was a friendship that endured for nearly a half century with Dan Dorn, who was simply his touchstone. How can we tell you all about Mel in this short obituary? We can''t - he was a classic.

Gail: One of the highlights of our 50th Reunion was seeing you and Mel. It was as if we were back in 1960 again. I remember those wonderful spring afternoons at the baseball field watching Mel, Coach Dodge and the Tiger baseball players. We are thinking of you at this time and sending our love to you and your family. Love, Laurie Ruda Smith

Death is just a doorway. We shed tears of pain over the physical loss of loved ones and they grief with us. But death is just a doorway and when our time comes our loved ones will be there to greet us.

Dear Gail -- my two brothers and I grew up with Mel when he lived in Los Osos as a teenager. The four of us would play ball in an empty field below the Middle School. One of my fondest memories was the afternoon that we (mostly Mel) took a brand new softball and hit it so hard it became lopsided and very soft. Great guy, great career, great loss.

Gail, Chris, Jason & Shirley: I remember the first time I met Mel and I was so excited and in awe of him. He was sitting on the stairs at our house looking at my Father's "World Record Certificate" in track and field from the 30's. Mel was really impressed and kept saying, "not too many people can show that". The whole time I was just staring at him thinking what a world class athlete he was. Mel & I do have one thing in common, we both share our blood with our grandson Jack during his heart surgery. Gail, Chris, Jason & Shirley....we'll cherish the memories.

Dear Gail,
I’m very sorry to hear about Mel’s passing and pray for the peace of our Lord for you and the family. Mel lived with my Mon and I for one year while we played high school baseball together and we had fun for sure. It was an art to watch Mel go into the hole between shortstop (his position at the time) and the 3rd baseman and toss the ball (on one leg) to our first baseman who had to jump high to catch Mel’s strong throw. We had fun driving his new red (I think if I’m not too old) Corvette when he first signed with Cincinnati……smile……we did change the position of the floor gear shift due to “speed shifting”. Could tell you many more stories, but will wait for another time. A poem was sent to me in 1975 and I pass it on to you………

“Think of breathing air and finding it celestial air –
Of feeling invigorated and finding it immortality—
Of taking hold of a hand and finding it God’s hand—
Of stepping ashore and finding it Heaven.”

Sincerely,
Butch Jones

Dear Gail and family - Bob and I were so sad to hear about Mel's passing. Bob remembers the high school times and what a terrific athlete Mel was. We renewed old class memories in October at our 50th reunion and he will always be remembered as a true friend. Please know we are thinking of you at this terribly sad time.

Last night I dusted off my old baseball cards and pulled out my 1969 Mel Queen and Harmon Killebrew. I placed them on my night table, where they'll stay for a while I guess, an homage not only to these two fine gentlemen, but also an homage to being 10 years old and loving the game of baseball back when there was a lot to love. Thank you Mel. May you rest in peace. And my thoughts and prayers are with Mel's family and loved ones.

Sammy and I are so sorry to hear of Mel's passing. I'll always remember the time he saved my life when a giant storm caught us outside Morro Rock and after about six attempts with a dying motor, he finally got us home. Every moment we spent with you and Mel are deeply cherished.
