Randy Coates Obituary

Randy Coates... Our Dad, Grandpa, Son, Brother and friend died at 63 from a heart attack Sunday, April 24, 2011. Randy, enthusiast for life, gigantic personality, friend to all and champion of fun, will dearly be missed by many. Randy''s passions for life led him to relocate his family to San Luis Obispo in 1993 and open the most successful coffee shop on the Central Coast - Uptown Espresso. His charm, great business sense and love for coffee aided in most San Luis residents to become regulars at Uptown, as well as refer to Randy as the "Peoples Mayor." Randy brought out the best in all of us. With Randy you were always having fun. He will be forever young in our hearts - ripping around town on his bikes, hiking the mountains, eating burnt chips and fried chicken, wearing his Pendletons and sipping on a turkey and coke. He will be in every thought or appreciation of this beautiful world we live in - daily. He may be gone from sight but definitely not forgotten. His humor, love, kindness and passion for life lives in all of us who he touched with his friendship. Randy is survived by his mother Emilia Coates; daughter, Mia Russi (Jim) and their children Kaden and Kona Russi; son, Randy "Doobie" Coates and fiance Kayla Pepper; dear friend and former wife of 33 years, Norene Cantella; and sisters Diane Smith and family and Jaeanine Mahoney and family; and brother, Dr. Glen Coates and family. In honor of the life of Randy Coates, Mia Russi and Doobie Coates will be hosting a Celebration of Life for their father, beginning with a hike up Randy''s favorite mountain, Bishops Peak, at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at the Foothill entrance, and a celebration at 4:30 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo Elks Lodge, 222 Elks Lane in San Luis Obispo. In lieu of flowers, please bring a small dessert and your favorite story of Randy to the Elks Lodge. Aloha a hui hou Randy... dad... friend... you are dearly loved and missed. P.S. we heard the fried chicken is good and the beer is cold in heaven...

Randy - Gonna miss you pal. I can't begin to tell you how much we loved having you as a neighbor, and how great it was to see you around town or in the hood after Doobie moved in. You were the bright spot in the day of anyone lucky enough to cross your path. You touched the lives of many more than you know. I'll always have fond memories of your laughing smirk as you rode off, watching us wash the mud off our dirt bikes on Sunday afternoons; (yeah you were probably right about that). A sad day for all of us here but I'll bet heaven had a party when you got there, probably passing out the cold Coronas as I type this... Hasta pronto mi amigo!

Hiking BIshop's Peak with Randy was an experience! So full of life and hopefulness. We had lunch at Black Horse not long ago and he shared his ideas for a new business, talked of his current endeavors in the Mother Lode and offered to help out at our mountain cabin nearby. A wonderful friend, a passionate man and someone who lived life fully. Thanks Randy for your friendship. You are already missed greatly. I will be out of town for the memorial--I'd be there if I could. Blessings.

The hum drum of work would always changed when I could see Randy walk out of his coffee shop, with his full-time smile, after dealing with us.

Randy was one of the first people i met when I moved to SLO in 1997. Since then, I was one of the many lucky persons who were able to enjoy many happy times with him. When I say lucky, I mean it. His smile and kind words to us all will be forever cherished. He was a man who taught me many important life lessons, a man who I never wanted to dissappoint. Randy will forever be a part of our hearts and everyday lives. He will be in my heart forever. To Mia, Doobie and Norene, thank you for sharing one of the greatest men i have ever met.

Randy... you will be missed. Thanks for smiles, your great conversations, and your friendship over the years. Can't believe you're gone but Heaven needs another coffee spot for our other dear friends. God Bless your family and loved ones.

Oh Randy, my heart is shocked and (extremely) saddened at your passing...your smiling eyes, larger than life smile and overall love for people will forever inspire me...my mind is swimming with happy memories of you behind the counter at Uptown handing out Wild Turkey Shots during Thanksgiving, or when you'd join me at a table beneath one of the patio's palms and ask me questions about my family and life in general as I sipped the best of the best coffee in town...You are dearly loved and missed. May your family know that you're in good hands now: "Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again." (an old Irish Prayer).
All of my love always, Claire Lavelle

Randy...The bright light that your were in this lifetime shall never fade. You roared into this town as quickly as you have left it leaving in your remarkable wake a rumble that pierces the deepest silence, an indelible smile that brightened all who were fortunate enough to cross your path. You possessed an impressive & courageous spirit and were never afraid to dance to the beat of your own drum. You remind me that, ephemeral as our lives are, to laugh, Love and live life to its fullest.
Gone but not forgotten, your resplendent spirit will live forever.
Love & Namaste,
Li Li

Awww man Randy Dude! What the hell leaving us!

Randy was one of the very few people who ALWAYS was surrounded by a vibe of happy and positive. There was always a twinkle in his eye. I remember when I first started going to his coffee shop a long time ago, I only walked in about 4 times before he came over and introduced himself and from then on he greeted me every time he was there with his happy smile. No one does a coffee shop like Randy. No one fries chicken like him either. He was soooo generous. Always offering help...and coffee. I have lots of memories Randy, and none of them come without a smile and a most come with a chuckle.

I miss you and know that whatever spirit you're hanging with...they're grinning :)

Randy was my friend for over 45 years. I had the good luck of spending some very fun filled days with him last year - playing like we did when we were teenagers - riding bikes - taking long walks at the beach - looking at old pictures and sharing our stories. He loved his family more than anything. He leaves a wonderful legacy of warmth and fun to his grand children as well as all of his friends and family. We will see you on the other side my friend.

I will always think of Randy, as a man who always wanted the inside story. His ability to sum up a situation, and grasp all the possibilities is what will always make our relationship special. I will miss the chats we had my friend. May the Devil know you're dead, a half hour after you're in heaven.

Uptown was like my second home for a good straight year in a half when I worked downtown during 2003. Got to know Randy a little and he was always so sweet and happy with an AMAZING smile. He had this sort of charm and charisma about him that when talking to him it was impossible not to smile. My condolences to his family, friends and random acquaintances like me that he's touched.
