Robert Harway Obituary

Dr. Robert Alan "Bob" Harway, MD, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, in San Luis Obispo, California, at the age of 93. A devoted physician, accomplished musician, and beloved family man, Bob led a life marked by service, passion, and dedication.

Born on September 11, 1932, in New York City, Bob started playing piano at the age of four. Bob moved to California and graduated from Hollywood High, where he played in a jazz band. He went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), earning his undergraduate degree in 1954. He funded his education by performing at bar mitzvahs and jazz clubs. Driven by a calling to heal and serve others, he continued at UCLA Medical School and graduated in 1958 with his Doctor of Medicine degree.

Following medical school, Bob completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Los Angeles County Hospital in 1963. That same year, he began his military service as a Captain in the United States Army, serving as an orthopedic surgeon in Fairbanks, Alaska until 1966. His time in the Army was a testament to his commitment to both country and medicine.

After completing his military service, Bob entered private practice in Bakersfield, California from 1966 to 1976. During this period, he also founded and operated an air ambulance service-an endeavor that combined his medical expertise with his passion for aviation. A certified FAA private pilot, Bob took great pride in using his skills as a pilot to extend care to those in need.

In 1976, Bob relocated to San Luis Obispo where he continued his orthopedic practice with Dr. French at French Medical Hospital. His career further expanded as he served as a staff orthopedic surgeon at the California Men's Colony from 1987 to 2000 and later at the Community Health Center of the Central Coast. In addition to clinical work, he contributed as a Qualified Medical Evaluator for the State of California Board of Workers' Compensation and served as a Quality Control Evaluator for the Medical Board of California.

Beyond medicine, Bob was a man of many talents and passions. A gifted jazz pianist, he performed professionally throughout his life and was an active member of the San Luis Obispo Jazz Federation. Music brought him joy and connection-a rhythm that echoed through every part of his life.

Bob is lovingly remembered by his wife Olga; children Elana (husband Mark Sada), Amy, Zoli, and Paula (husband Matt Walker); and grandchildren Kaila Walker Campos (husband Josiah), Luke Walker, Hannah Sada, Robert Sada, Natalie Sada, Catrina Sada and his great-granddaughter Isla Mae Campos. His legacy lives on through them-in their memories and stories shared across generations.

A man who wore many hats-physician, pilot, musician-but most importantly husband, father, and grandpa-Bob Harway lived fully with purpose and heart. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who hear his story.

We warmly invite you to join us on Friday, December 12th for a Memorial Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church, located at 221 Daly Ave, San Luis Obispo. Yesterday

My most memorable time spent with Bob was on quite an adventurous trip through the mountains and jungles of Peru. While on our time in Peru our guide in the jungle coined the name "Mr. Bob". Ever since I´ve always referred to Dr. Harway as Mr Bob as an endearing memory to the man who I found to be full of stories, humor, and the occasional grumpiness. They are fond memories and I´m so glad to have spent the time with both Bob and Olga during this time.

I send my sincerest condolences to the extended Harway family and also celebrate a most accomplished life.

Yesterday

Bob was a real and genuine person. He and Olga have always been examples to me and my family of how to enjoy your life; with gusto. Our travels with them cemented this view and will always live in our memories. His frank, open style could have appeared gruff to some, but was truthful and honest. I always enjoyed and respected him for these qualities. He will be missed by us all, but it is comforting to know what a full and loving life that he had. Rest in peace, "Robert".

Hello My dears, I am writing to ask you how do I get in line to sing one song, Shirley Horn's version of "Here's to Life" in Eflat. I have a chart for this song of which I will be making several copies to share with the musicians who might like to join in on the tune.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Bob was an integral part of the jazz community for many decades. He played on most of the 40 Piano Showcases held each year. The Jazz Federation has created a YouTube playlist of many videos featuring Bob at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-rHkAo9dvquREHHfFP_Rxz8BfKkEKS0l

Bob´s mother and my paternal grandmother were sisters. They came from Kapuvar in western Hungary, near its border with Austria. I first met Bob and Olga in the 1970s in Bakersfield during the first of my many visits to Caliornia (often as a grateful guest of theirs). I remember a swimming pool full of children, including their own. I shared Bob´s love of music (passive in my own case) and animals. We also shared interests in politics and history. I am forever indebted to Bob for once showing me his way of making oatmeal (what we in England call "porridge"): gently steaming the bowl for 30 minutes. I have been making it Bob´s way ever since. Our hearts go out to all the family members of this good and faithful servant. We had the privilege of being both coworker and patients.
As a support staff person at Community Health Center I learned that passion heals as much by technique as by heart.
His stories were legendary . His brush with his commanding officer for
diagnosing a malingerer as "lost in space" as well as his dictum "become an artist with the needle and the world will beat a path to your door " will remain with me forever.
His New York chutzpah never faded. The last time I saw him he was taking on a lotto vending machine and not giving an inch.
Memories of him will always be a blessing!
Peace...Jim and Susan Hofman

Condolences to the Harway family for the loss of your great patriarch! Robert´s circle of life reflects a great legacy of service, compassion, and musical talent to the entire community. You will be dearly missed, Dr. Harway. Ralph and I enjoyed all those times you invited us to your lovely home to listen to your musical concerts as you played the piano! Loved Olga! She was always by your side and the love you had for each other really showed! Years later, I became your daughter Elana´s cheerleader advisor and English teacher. She really made you proud by following in your footsteps becoming an orthopedics' doctor. May you rest in peace, Dr. Harway and meet your old friend, Ralph Kettelkamp in heaven! Love, Martha Michalojko Kettelkamp

I remember Dr. Harway from my legal practice. He was an expert evaluator for many of us, and a truly wonderful man. R.I.P. Doctor.
