Robert Reynolds Obituary

Robert Gary Reynolds

March 7, 1936 - November 26, 2024

Orcutt, California - Robert Gary "Bob" Reynolds, a cherished artist and educator, passed away on November 26, 2024, in Orcutt, California, at the age of 88. Born on March 7, 1936, in San Luis Obispo, California, Bob was a beloved figure in his community and beyond. Bob was the youngest sibling of Edward "Buddy" Reynolds and Betty Lou, born to parents Viola Curran and Agee Reynolds. He was athletic in high school, excelling in football and basketball, and later became an avid tennis player. Bob served six years in the Navy Reserves, embodying a spirit of dedication and service. A gifted artist, Bob earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and a Master of Arts from Cal Poly. His passion for art was matched by his dedication to teaching, where he was known for his compassion and patience. As Chair of the Art Department at Cal Poly, Bob was loved and respected by both faculty and students. His excellence in teaching was recognized with a Distinguished Teaching Award and the President's Arts Award. Bob's artistic contributions were significant, with his work featured in national magazines and over 20 art books. He authored two books and was an integral part of San Luis Obispo's cultural landscape. He designed a county seal, a Hearst Castle stamp, and the Cal Poly floats for the Rose Parade for 14 years. His popular watercolor workshops in the High Sierras were a testament to his passion for sharing art with others. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Reynolds, Bob is survived by his daughter Jill, sons Scott and Rick, stepdaughters Denise, Genine, and Lisa, and his sister Betty Lou. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Brianna, Tessa, Danica, Charlie, Siena, Colton, Genevieve, Sierra, Natalie, and Jake. Known for his kindness, sense of humor, and boyish grin, Bob treated everyone with respect and generosity. His passion for art, movies, and music was infectious, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. Robert's legacy will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends and through the beautiful art he has shared with the world.

I was very fortunate to be an acquaintance of Bob's. Several years ago, Bob presented .e with the gorgeous, fra.ed and matted watercolor of the San Simeon school house and inscribed a personal note to me in his exquisite coffee table book, "The Art of Robert Reynolds". So sorry to hear of the passing of such a wonderful man.

Bob was my colleague in the Department of Art and Design at Cal Poly. But he was much, much than that as a friend. We played tennis together, and one time after a tennis match we ended up in adjacent beds in Sierra Vista Hospital, me with knee surgery and Bob with back surgery. We shared many other of our most significant life changes. He was an amazing talent and a most appreciated friend. I miss him. Pat, I wish lots of love to come your way.

When I worked for San Luis Coastal USD, there were several beautiful Robert Reynolds paintings in the Superintendent's office. They were very special to Brenda Edwards and me. And incredible artist.

Bob was a classmate at San Luis Obispo High School where his art was recognized early on. He was kind, thoughtful, generous and a very special person. Gratefully for us, his beautiful art lives on and he won't be forgotten. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. May he meet up with his good friend Bill Todd and share their memories.
