Susan Helen Oglesby

Susan Helen Oglesby was born in August 1935 in Cheltenham, England. After a long illness Susan died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007.

Her parents, Dr. Thomas Evans and Dr. Enid Evans, moved to Singapore when she was a child, where he was a British colonial service doctor. In 1942 she was evacuated from Singapore ahead of the Japanese invasion forces, but her father was incarcerated as a POW, yet survived. Susan spent the war as a refugee at St. Cyprians Girls School in Cape Town, South Africa.

She attended the University of Cape Town Medical School and graduated in radiography. She practiced for some time at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. She then followed her passion for theatre and moved to London where she attended the Webber-Douglas Drama School. Susan appeared in repertory theatre and several BBC television Shakespearian productions before moving on to married life.

In 1986 Susan moved to Los Osos and then to Heritage Ranch in 1989.

On October 22, 1993 Sue proudly became a United States citizen. In the face of an injury, which left her disabled, she was courageous, involving herself with her concern for the environment and wildlife. She was an avid birder, taking part in the field research for the San Luis Obispo County Audobon Society, Breeding Bird Atlas. She was also an active participant in the Cornell University Avian Studies Programs.

Susan is survived by her husband of 28 years, Leonard Oglesby; daughter, Helen Savage of Clearlake, Calif; son, Andrew Savage of Cape Town, South Africa; grandchildren Ben and Viktoria; sister, Margaret Gibbard; nieces Sheila Mills of Huntingon Beach, Calif., and Mary Ann McTiernan of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and her many friends around the world.

A celebration of Susan's life is planned for a future date.
