Carl Aiken Obituary

Carl "Buddy" H. Aiken, Jr., 76, died Thursday, June 6, 2024, at his Buda home with his family by his side. Carl was born July 26, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas at the Nix Hospital to Carl Sr. and Loyce Aiken. Carl Jr. was quite proud of the fact that his father was born in 1883 and had him at age 63.

In 1972, Carl graduated from Southwest Texas State College with a degree in Education. James Farmer was quick to put him to work teaching 7th and 8th grade math. He later began teaching algebra for high school credit, which became his "great love." Carl found enjoyment in his teaching and rapport with his students. He was an avid storyteller, as his students and friends can attest. Many would repeat his stories back to him almost verbatim years later. He inspired many to become teachers or pursue even more challenging fields. Many were the letters from thankful parents who appreciated Carl going the "extra mile" with their child.

In 1992, he received the Teaching Excellence Award from the San Marcos Lion's Club. In 1996-97, Carl was awarded by his peer teachers the Goodnight Jr. High School Teacher of the Year. Carl taught a total of 42 years in the San Marcos CISD.

Carl married Jean Grisham on April 5, 1975. The two were each other's lifelong companions and friends. They were blessed with two children, John David and Amy. Their next anniversary would have been their 50th.

Carl is survived by his sister, Marie Whitman of New York City, his wife Jean and children, John and Amy, nephews Christopher Hubble (Michelle) and Dennis Ellington (Tashia) and niece Katherine Whitman. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carleen Aiken of San Antonio.

Carl was a faithful Christian, devoted father, and loving husband. Though he may have left us, his spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choosing.

The family would like to express our appreciation for the loving care provided by the next of kin, Home Hospice Health, Compassas Hospice, and Thomason Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are: Dennis Ellington, Chris Hubble, Randy Hunt, Bobby Rice, Bobby Lackey and Brad Harrison. Honorary Pallbearers are: David Trinidad, David Ellison, Blake Stasney, Mike Tessaro and Les Dullnig.

Services are Friday, June 14 at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos, beginning with a visitation at 10 a.m. followed by a service at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest at San Marcos City Cemetery following services. I have been in my second career as a high school math teacher for about 7 years now. I took PreAlgebra with Mr Aiken in 7th grade in 1990. He is undoubtedly one of the many teachers who inspired me to switch into a career as a mathematics teacher. He will be missed.
