When I was ten years old, I was over at the Rowans house all of the time. Danny was five years older and it was like a different generation in those days, but close nevertheless. Baseball was it. It was everything to the Rowan family. I was lucky enough to play for Uncle Tommy Rowan's Whites Cardinals Little League team for 2 years (Life never got better, never, won 33 out of 36 games). Danny set up a full court basketball set up in the back yard. It was great. Spec would come home from working the night shift at the railroad directing all of the locomotives and cars from the Tower without a computer. Spec would be sound asleep the next day and I would come in and ask Freda if I could wake him up. When I got the okay, I'd shake him up because I wanted him to hit me long fungo fly balls all day. I got real good for a little kid----felt like Willie Mays. Spec would wake up and tell me to go in the backyard and shoot hoops on Danny's court while he got ready to drive me to Callahan Park. While shooting baskets, Spec would play Bobby Thompson's home run on a phonograph that was hooked to loudspeakers put in by Danny at both ends of the court. I'd listen to that home run heard around the world and off we'd go. I missed the whole family when I moved to the other side of town
