Edie Stene Obituary

Edie Stene Resident of La Selva Beach Edie (Schwab) Stene passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at her home in La Selva Beach surrounded by her family. She was born in New Monterey, California on Aug. 25, 1926 to Victor Schwab and Rose Buero Schwab. Edie was the youngest of 11 children, and spent her childhood in New Monterey. She went to Bayview Elementary School and graduated from Monterey High in 1945. She married Al Stene, a cute sailor from Minnesota; that she met at an USO dance in 1945. They went on to eventually settle in Del Rey Oaks until the family moved to Watsonville in 1960. After her 4 children were raised Edie decided to go to college, and graduated from San Jose State. In 1976, while teaching for the Hollister School District, she decided to return to school for her masters degree. In 1981, Edie graduated with a Masters in Administration and a Credential in Education from the University of San Francisco. She retired in 1990, and loved every year of her teaching career in Hollister. Edie's proudest achievement was that all 4 of her children graduated from college. Her 8 grandchildren have succeeded in pursuing their educations, careers, and are starting their families. Edie also leaves 3 great grandchildren. Edie has always been a joiner. When she would join a club, if there was a need for leadership, she happily stepped up and filled those needs. Some of the clubs she belonged to were San Carlos School Mother's Club, YLI, Watsonville Women's Club, the La Selva Beach Women's Club, The Santa Cruz Follies, The Watsonville Historical Society, PV Golf Club, the Women's Guild at Resurrection Church and The Service League at Watsonville Hospital, which she enjoyed the most. She enjoyed golf, and even achieved a hole in one. Edie started following the Giants in 1958 and became one of their biggest fans. She attended many games throughout the years; among the games she went to were Opening Day and the final game the Giants played at Candlestick Park. We'll miss our Mom, our friend, and our LaLa. She had a distinct voice, at times you could hear her in a crowd before you saw her. Next you would see her great, welcoming smile, and hear her warm laugh. Edie and Al had an annual Christmas block party at their home in their beloved La Selva Beach. She was the spark that always got the party going, and kept the party going! Edie is preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings and her husband, Al. She leaves behind her children Vic (Judy) of Fresno, Janice (Dave) of Watsonville, Mark (Dawn) of Cato DE Carza, CA, Edie (Kevin) of Volcano CA, and her dog and companion Sally. She will be missed by her many friends and her extended family. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Edie's name to the scholarship of your choice or to your favorite charity. Please join the family at the memorial in celebration of a well-spent life! The memorial mass will be held at The Resurrection Church, 7600 Soquel Drive, Aptos CA on Tuesday, September 4th at 10:30 A.M. The interment will be held at the San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey. Arrangements were entrusted to Mehl's Colonial Chapel, Watsonville.

To the family of Mrs. Stene,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your mom and grandma. I was the second of three siblings to have her for the 5th grade at R.O. Hardin School. She was such a dedicated teacher and never compared me to my older sister, which was something I had previously encountered. She encouraged us to strive to be the best we could be and that was anything we wanted.

May your many wonderful memories comfort you during this difficult time.

With sincere sympathy

To the family of Mrs. Stene,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your dear Mother. She was my 5th grade teacher at R.O. Hardin school. Your Mom was that one teacher that really made a huge impact in my life. I was a very shy kid & your Mom taught me that I could do anything, if I tried & worked hard. At a time when females were told "you can't excel" because of gender, Mrs. Stene taught me that yes, I could. She will always hold a very special place in my heart. Your family is in my prayers. God speed Mrs. Stene and thank you!

Dear (little) Edie,
I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful Mom. I always loved the way she smiled and laughed and the pride she took in showing off a new outfit or two. She had a way of knowing we were up to no good, but never judged us, she would just give us an all knowing smile. I was Eddie Haskell to her June Cleaver, it would drive you crazy!!!
I am happy knowing "Mom" is now with God, and your Dad and my Mom. Heaven has welcomed another deserving soul.
Lots of love,
Maureen aka "Eddie Haskell"
