Gladys Irene Hart
August 7, 1933 - February 24, 2017
Resident of Santa Cruz
Gladys passed gently on February 23, 2017 at the age of 83. Gladys was born in in Watsonville to William (Bill) Fagundes and Sarah (Scalici) Fagundes.
Affectionately known as Pookie, Gladys attended local Watsonville schools. She went to Hartnell College where she made lifelong friends and met her first husband, Santa Cruz local Bob Scofield. She and Bob had one child, Sara. Gladys then married another Santa Cruz local, Carl Hart, to whom she was married to for 53 years until his passing. Carl had custody of his three children and they raised a combined family.
Gladys had a love of learning, and returned to school in the late 60's, first at Cabrillo, then at San Jose State. She was an accomplished oil painted and quilter, selling her quilts in a gallery at the old Cooper House.
Gladys found a way to combine her love of travel and learning with the Elderhostel (Road Scholar) program. She also visited Calistoga yearly with friends and family to soak in the waters until illness slower her down. Although she didn't learn to drive until she was 32, she loved taking trips, seeing the missions and any place that interest her. Gladys was a member of Christian Life Center, and for many years organized the library, food pantry and helped cook the monthly senior lunches.
Her zany sense of humor, energy, and willingness to help will be missed by her friends, family and the community.
Gladys is survived by her daughter Sara Mikles (Joe) and her brother William Fagundes, his former wife Pat, sister-in-law Edith Fagundes, nieces Laura, Suzanne, Cara, Patrice, Sarah, nephew William, and their families, Carl's children and families and many cousins and close friends.
Thanks go to the staff of Aegis of Aptos, who allowed her to have her kitty with her and Heartland Hospice for helping to ease her final months.
A memorial service will be held on March 4th at 1:00pm at Christian Life Center, 1009 Mission Street, Santa Cruz.
