"I am happy to have known Jim after meeting him through an on-line dating service. We shared some time in Arizona and he introduced me to Yelapa in Mexico. I learned much from him about Viet Nam and its impact on the veterans of the war. I wish I could come to the memorial to remember Jim together with Nick and other old friends who enjoyed knowing him as I did. "

Jim was a truly unique person who had many varied interests from his love of literature, writing and the environment. I first met Jim in Burlingame, where we had both attended Burlingame High School. Jim was back from Vietnam, living in Moss Beach and had started at a local junior college. I had recently graduated from high school and Jim encouraged me to start college as well. We were both finding our way at the time and Jim was adjusting to life after the service. Later when Jim moved to Santa Cruz we kept in touch off and on. We had not seen each other in some time until last year. Jim came by and visited last April in my home with Terry and I, who was visiting from up north. It was great to see him and reconnect; it was as if no time had passed. Later I was able to visit Jim at the VA a few days before he passed. He remained compassionate, thoughtful and giving to those around him. I will remember Jim as a truly free spirit who had a deep compassion for others. Peace be with you Jim!

I got to hang out with Jim on a couple of visits to Yelapa. What an interesting, sardonic and dare I say, sexy guy. From what I could tell he seemed to live life on his own terms which is inspiring. Our brief chats made quite an impression on me and I'm sad at his passing.
