Resident of Watsonville
Joseph (Gus) Manuel Castro of Watsonville died Friday, August 2, 2013. He was 98. Mr. Castro was born on Feb. 15, 1915, in Watsonville. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1934. Upon being drafted in to the Army, he spent two cold winters as his unit contributed to building the strategic Alaska-Canada Highway. Upon returning to Watsonville, Mr. Castro resumed his employment at Granite Construction. He loved to drive and would frequently take the family to Utah to visit his brother Carlos. After retirement, Mr. Castro and his wife Bernice made numerous road trips in California and beyond to visit family and friends. Mr. Castro is survived by his eight children, Margie, John (Sandy), Frank, Tina (Robert), Theresa (Scott), Joseph (Lori), Anthony (Gail), Mary (Kevin); cousin, Robert (Lydia) Arias; nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Castro; sister, Hermina Castro; and brother, Carlos Castro. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. and Rosary at 7 p.m. at Mehl's Chapel on Aug. 12th. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Aug. 14 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church followed by a burial service at Watsonville Catholic Cemetery. Donations in Mr. Castro's memory can be made to St. Patrick's Altar Society and Moreland Notre Dame in Watsonville.

Always remember those wonderful family days at Uncle Joe and Auntie Bee's house with all my cousins. We were all lucky. Uncle Joe was a family man and man of faith. I know he is happy to be with his God.
