Lance Michael Wehrman
April 24, 1948~Feb. 6, 2016
Resident of Santa Cruz
Lance Michael Wehrman passed away in Watsonville on Saturday, February 6, 2016 after an extended illness. He was 67.
Mike was born in Dallas, Texas on April 24, 1948 to Truxton and Faith Wehrman. The family moved to San Francisco in 1951 and later settled in Santa Cruz in 1961. Mike graduated from Soquel High in class of 1966. After high school he enlisted in the Navy and saw duty in Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1970.
Mike was employed at Bayview Elementary School for over 30 years as a maintenance director. He loved his job and enjoyed interacting with the children and teachers. Even after retirement, he volunteered his time at the school. His humor and dedication will be missed by everyone he came in contact with.
He is survived by his son, Eric and his brothers and sister, Bill, Gus, Tom and Ina. Mike is preceded in death by his sister, Bonnie Marsalisi.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Santa Cruz County and the Alpha-One Foundation. Mehl's Colonial Chapel was entrusted with funeral arrangements.

7 years has gone by, I still have birthday messages on my answering machine. When I think I can listen without bawling I turn one on. I miss our phone calls, I miss your laugh, I miss your quirky ways. I miss you!

Uncle Mike, can't believe it's been 5 years already. I miss our phone calls and your wonderful laugh and funny voices that you left me on my answering machine. I miss you reminding me of everyone's birthdays and how you would say I didn't need to come and visit and yet when we did come to visit it took us over an hour to say good bye. I hope you are up in heaven with the rest of the gang, having a wonderful second life!

Mike, I enjoyed our conversations and shared laughter whenever you came by the cafeteria. It was fun to discover we had a shared connection through my niece, who was friends with Bonnie, you were at Soquel high with my brother and knew the same people. I will miss you and your hugs.

Oh Mike! What a man! Hard to describe what you meant to our family...to all at Bay View. I have so many good memories and stories about you. We go back a long way...singing around the fire at Seacliff...watching "Roots" on a tiny TV at our house....playing music in our yard...laughing, drinking and yes..even smoking a little weed sometimes.... But Friday Bay View parties at Eskimo Nell's.
There are those memories, and also the memories at school with my children. You were like family to them. I remember when I felt upset we couldn't afford sixth grade camp and we didn't want to accept a "scholarship". You got it!...you said our son could work and earn the money, so he helped you for several afternoons. I'm sure the school gave the money but you told him he earned it...he felt so proud. We also remember moving a piano from Bay View to our back house, all of us rolling it down Bay Street on a skateboard. Such fun we had! I remember you riding your bike up Laurel Hill to school every day, and always, always your green Datsun.
Each time I think of you, Mike, I have a big smile on my face. My family has Mike memories to lasrpt forever. Your attitufpde was amazing a few years ago when we had lunch on the wharf. Even though you were sick you had that twinkle in your eye and were still flirting with the waitress. You are our hero.

Mike was such a neat guy. When I went to Bay View I took the city bus to school and during 4th-6th grade I was often the first student to arrive. But, Mike was already there, so I knew I was safe. As soon as two more kids arrived he would be the fourth man in a game of four square. Seriously, every single morning. What a great friend to students!! When a few more kids arrived he would head back to his general duties as we kept playing, now with enough students to keep the game going. He still had an eye on the general playground happenings and all of us knew if anyone got hurt or if anything was amiss on the playground he was there to help.

I never played kickball at lunch (where Mike was the kickball pitcher every day, rooting for both teams, of course), but alway enjoyed watching the game as I ate my lunch at the picnic tables nearby before heading off to the playground with friends.

One day when I was in High School I was walking from the bus to my part time job after school, along Frederick St. A guy on a bike across the street called out to me and when I looked over he waved and smiled. It was Mike! I was shocked he recognized me at age 16, since I hadn't seen him since I was 12.

I'm 34 now, and he still carries a cherished place in my heart as one of the neatest adults I knew as a child. I will always think of him fondly and with great appreciation for helping me have a great start to every school day during those years. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

My loving brother Mike,
I was fortunate to be able to spend time with you in November where we reminisced, shared some laughs and where I tried to offer my assistance to make you more comfortable. I will miss our daily phone conversations and you singing Happy Birthday to me and our children.
No matter how sick you were you always had a positive attitude and a big smile.
I thank all who offered your condolences as well as the physicians and caregivers who watched over Mike. It made my heart swell knowing that Mike had so many friends who loved him.
You will be missed dear Mike. May you be in peace.
Your loving family in Bay View, Washington.

My best memories of my Uncle Mike were his visits when he was in the Navy to see our family in Mount Lake Terrace, Washington. He would be in uniform and get down on the ground to play with us. I have been blessed to be one of his phone buddies the past several years and we got to visit a few times before my husband and I moved to Georgia this past year. To say he was a giving man is an understatement and I am sure all of his kids at the school would agree with me. He even tried to give my husband his old Green Datsun on one of our visits to Santa Cruz. We had some wonderful talks over the years about our family and the kids at the school. That was his passion. He showed me the scrapbooks with all the messages the kids gave him when he retired and I was so touched that I cried. He said oh it is no big deal. But I knew it was a big deal. And I felt so proud of him for all he had given to all the kids that he met at the school during his years there. I knew he was ill but his death has hit me hard because we still had so much more to say and I wasn't ready to stop hearing his voice on the phone. Every year for my birthday he would call and leave me the most hysterical messages on my answering machine. I won't ever get another one of those. But I do feel so blessed for the time that we had. He was a good father, a good Uncle and a good friend to all who knew him. I will miss his laugh and his quirky wit and I will cherish every minute I had with him. Rest in peace my sweet Uncle Mike. I know I wasn't your favorite, but I know you loved me and I love you and will miss you all the days of my life and can't wait till we meet again. Save some good stories for me.

I first knew Mike as "Mike the Milkman" as he would bring the Kindergarten milk at lunch time and then to Mike the Janitor. He always had a smile on his face and genuinely cared about each and every student at Bay View. So thankful that you were a part of my childhood. Prayers and hugs go out to your family. May you rest in peace.

He was so special to our family. My kids adored him and, as a Mom that came to Bay View often, I always loved his warmth and beautiful smile. I loved hearing from my grandchildren that he came back after retirement to play kickball with them. He will always have a special place in my heart!!

When I was 6 years old I was hit by a car on the corner of bay and mission. I began 1st grade with full cast on my left leg Mike helped me get around at recess. I never once felt unsafe with him. He was one of the good men in this world. When my own children went to bay view it was so wonderful to see my old friend still movin around Bat View and still the nicest person there. Mike is one of my favorite child hood memories.

I knew Mike from his Bay View days. I worked in Food Service from City schools. I saw Mike often when I picked up lunches. Mike was loved by every kid at the school. On his last day at work, every kid wore a bandana, like Mike's standard look.
During the big flood in 1982, Mike and I
volunteered to help folks at Felton Grove, buried in mud. One house had mud all the way up to the mailbox. I asked Mike how they would get their mail? Mike cracked up. Later, I became a letter carrier for 24 years in Aptos. RIP Mike.
