Marion Stegner Obituary

Marion Lawrence Mackenzie Stegner
March 11, 1936 - January 13, 2018
Vermont
Marion passed away peacefully on January 13, 2018, in Vermont surrounded by her beloved partner, Lee Wright; her grown children, Page Stegner and Rachael Sheedy; her grandchildren, Sheridan Stegner, Dillon Sheedy, Emma Sheedy; and her siblings, Frances Seemann, Laurie Mackenzie, Dorothy Mason, and Tina Mackenzie.
Marion grew up in Blue Bell, PA, attended Springside School through 12th grade. She went on to Briarcliff College where she studied cartography, then traveled to Scotland for the Experiment in International Living and to London, England.
Marion married Stuart Page Stegner in 1959 and moved to California. The family spent 3 years in the Peace Corp in Caracas Venezuela and Quito Ecuador where she started an artisans cooperative for the Warao Indians which continues to operate to this day. Those were wonderful years for Marion and led her to her life passion which was designing jewelry. For 35 years she created and designed one of a kind pieces that adorn and bring pleasure to many the world over.
Marion had an insatiable appetite for the arts, different cultures and all things beautiful. Her creative instincts and curiosity led her to be proficient in ceramics, weaving, jewelry, photography and wooden spoon carving. She loved people and hearing their stories. She loved her dogs. She was a voracious reader. Throughout her travels she met so many people that became life long friends. She saw design, color, wonder and beauty in everything. She was the keeper of the family history. Marion was an on the move, radiant being, traveling to over 30 countries within her lifetime. Her family and so many friends will miss her deeply…grief..grace..gratitude. We have been blessed by her life.
A celebration of life will be held in July. In lieu of flowers donations to The Hardwick Area Food Pantry in Hardwick, Vermont would be appreciated.

When I lived in northern California, it was my 30th birthday (1980)and my friends said they wanted to visit this artist's jewelry shop in Santa Cruz. Her shop was in a wooded area, very nice. We went in, looked at the beautiful jewelry in the glass cases and then Marion came out from the back room. Are you Fran? I looked surprised...yes I am. Well I have something here for you. Then she reached into the glass case, picked out this beautiful sterling silver cuff necklace. My friends pitched in together to get the necklace for my birthday and Marion was so kind and sweet and I think she enjoyed the surprise as well. I'll miss her, but I will always have my necklace so I will always think of Marion whenever I wear it. Rest in Peace Marion.

Our sister Marion was a shooting star in a midnight sky.
Her light will always remain in our hearts.
