Melvin Kaitschuck Obituary

Melvin Kaitschuck
April 28,1922 - March 31, 2016
Felton, California
We are sad to announce the passing of Melvin Kaitschuck during the early morning of March 31, 2016. Melvin was born in Chicago Illinois to Emil Kaitschuck and Ruth Wagoner Kaitschuck. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mildred Weiss Kaitschuck and his six children; Daniel Melvin Kaitschuck, Ruth Ann Cameron, Jo Ann Cureton, Rebecca Ann Dillon, Cynthia Ann Brown and Barbara Ann Adney as well as 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
Mel met Millie while they both attended Kelvyn Park High School in Chicago. After High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended flight school at Moffett Field in Mountain View California. On August 1, 1942 he earned his wings, received his commission and married his high school sweetheart the next day. During his naval career he flew blimps along the Pacific coast searching for German U-Boats and Japanese submarines. While stationed at Moffett Field, he and Millie lived in Mt. Herman. After the war they returned to the Chicago area. It took only one harsh winter there for them to decide to move back to the area they loved. They purchased a piece of property and built their home on Farmer Street, which at the time was a dirt road near "down town" Felton. He lived there until the end of his life.
After the war Mel tried his hand at a variety of jobs. He was a trained tool designer and pattern maker. Some of his jobs involved this training but in 1961 he attended college night classes. This education and his pattern maker training allowed him to receive a California State Teaching Credential and a teaching job at San Lorenzo Valley High School until he retired in 1982. He loved his students and teaching wood shop and mechanical drawing.
He and his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1951 and he was a committed member throughout his life. He and Millie helped form a Sunday School group that met in a rented hall in Ben Lomond. Mel held many church positions during the years. He is greatly missed by his family, fellow church members, friends, associates and former students as he touched the lives of many. A memorial service will be held at the LDS chapel located at 9545 Love Creek Road, Ben Lomond on June 11th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Valley Churches United in Mel's name.

Melvin was my drafting teacher in, I believe, 1963. I only attended SLVHS for one semester, then moved. But I do remember an expression he used that I use to this day: "Excuse me for talking, I didn't realize you were interrupting." Maybe there was a bit of Yogi Berra in Melvin Kaitschuck, and it lasted me for over 50 years. My condolences.
