Peter Stafford Obituary

1939-2007

Peter Stafford was born in Oakland, CA on 4/11/39 just minutes before his twin sister. His father's family owned cattle ranches in Nevada and his mother was an immigrant from Russia who reached the United States via China. His mother, his son, his twin sister, brother, and a sister from his mother's second marriage survive Peter. Peter died an untimely death from an accident in his home in Santa Cruz.

Peter graduated from Reed College and was known for his work in mathematics, most notably the Stafford's Theorem in Algorithms. Peter was a Reed's Scholar. Peter spent time in New York City working with the War Resister's League in the late 1960's while working on his first book with author Bonnie Golightly. Peter was the author of several new age books.

Peter came to live in Santa Cruz in 1974 and worked as a typesetter for the Good Times and many of the alternative newspapers. In the nonprofit arena, he worked and volunteered for the Homeless Garden Project and the California Grey Bears. Peter's humanity touched many individuals.

Peter was a pioneer and advocate for societal change. He is remembered for his compassion and equanimity as well as his scientific inquiries. Peter was a flamboyant spirit and a deep human being who will be sorely missed by family, friends, and free spirits everywhere.

There will be a Celebration of Peter's Life on Sunday, August 26 from 1 to 3 pm at the Attic which is located at 931 Pacific Ave. in Santa Cruz.
