Philip W. Harry

Philip W. Harry, born on January 16, 1933, in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and a veteran of the Korean War, passed away on October 14, 2023, in San Diego, California, at the age of 90.A distinguished man with a deep commitment to his country, Philip pursued his education, earning a law degree from Hastings College of Law after graduating from Penn State University. His legal career flourished in Santa Cruz, Ca. where he served on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, as the District Attorney, and was one of the first members of the California Coastal Commission.In 1995, he relocated to San Diego, and switched sides to ensure fair legal representation by creating a Public Defender section in the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. His dedication to social justice extended beyond the courtroom, as he actively supported organizations such as the United Way, the Sierra Club, and the Southwestern Yacht Club. He found joy in sailing, golf, and travel.Philip was the last of his five siblings to pass. He is survived by his wife, Kay M. Harry, with whom he shared 68 years of love and adventure. He engaged with numerous nephews and nieces across the United States throughout his life. We will remember his commitment to justice, his passion for the environment, the love he shared with his family and friends and his many stories about his life. He will be deeply missed.Philip requested that there not be a memorial service. If so inclined, donations to Planned Parenthood or the Sierra Club in his name are appreciated.
