Ralph in Taft, March 1998
Terry & Richard Ferl
October 17, 2007
For nearly 20 years, after Ralph moved to Sonoma and we then moved from the Santa Cruz area to the Midwest, we exchanged letters. We were Ralph's arm-chair travellers as he took us stay-at-home folks everywhere, sharing his experiences and his wonderful humor and stories. We also heard his tales of how he and his friend Mike went up to the high Sierra annually and camped in the rough--no shaving, no showers, and of course no gals!
When we first met Ralph he was in his second career, working as a cataloger at UC Santa Cruz library, as I did. It was very fun to have Ralph around and he was quite the industrious cataloger. He must have been a wonderful history teacher, too.
We'd like to share a photo he sent to us from March 24, 1998, taken at West Kern Oil Museum in Taft. Ralph wrote that he worked on such wooden oil rigs just before the war, climbing up and down the rigs. We have no doubt that in the war later he had much more perilous experiences flying in the B-24 Liberator.
We will cherish all our memories of our dear long-time correspondent and friend Ralph and will miss his kindness, generosity, and great sense of humor and humanity.
In loving memory,
Terry & Richard Ferl
Saint Louis, Missouri
