Robert Stagnaro Obituary

Robert "Big Boy" Stagnaro
July 16, 1928-May 25, 2012
Resident of Santa Cruz
Robert "Big Boy" Stagnaro passed away peacefully on May 25th, 2012. He was surrounded by his family.
Robert Armando Stagnaro was born into the Original Stagnaro Family on July 16, 1928 at Hanley Hospital in Santa Cruz. The youngest of 13 children born to Cottardo and Battistina Stagnaro, he weighed a whooping pound and a half at birth (he was born 13 weeks premature). He was given whiskey thru an eye dropper to fight off infection and kept warm in a cigar box. One Day when his Father went to visit the nurse picked him up in the palm of her hand and said "my what big boy you are getting to be". The nickname Big Boy stuck ever since.
Robert's career on the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf began at the age of 7 when he learned to fillet fish alongside his father Cottardo and Uncle Malio at his family's business, the C Stagnaro Fish Market located at the center of the wharf. With the start of World War II, Robert was granted a special driver's license at the age of 13, so he could help his Dad in the family business as his brothers were off at war. Instead of going to school on Friday, he delivered fish from Boulder Creek to Watsonville. After graduating from Santa Cruz High School in 1946, he started skippering the various sport fishing boats in his family's fleet. Robert and his brother Stago, would skipper the Sea Stag II one of the fastest speed boats on the west coast. They would take passengers from the Pleasure Pier to what is now the entrance of the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor and back.
It was during this time Robert met the love of his life, Joan Brookman who was born in McCamey, Texas and had relocated to Santa Cruz with her family. She came to the Pleasure Pier to complain that he was keeping her up at night. He soon learned it was not what he thought. For you see when he turned the speed boat around at what is now the entrance to the Santa Cruz Harbor, he would rev up the boat's engine and proclaim to the passengers on the boat over the loud speaker "Hi de ho and away we go, see the bay the speed boat way". This would echo into Joan's bedroom window on East Cliff Drive and keep her awake at night. He never forgot that fiery Texan.
With the start of the Korean War in 1950, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy. He was based at North Island in San Diego where he was to become an Aviation Storekeeper. On December 24, 1952 he was granted a 24 hour leave for Christmas. His first order of business was to fly home and propose to his Texan. Robert and Joan were married August 29, 1953 in Santa Cruz. They left the day after their wedding to make their first home on Hamilton Ave in San Diego. Robert was promoted to 3rd class Aviation Storekeeper in late 1953. He was transferred from North Island to Miramar Naval Air Station where he helped to set up the one of the Navy's newest military bases. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in July 1954.
He and Joan returned to Santa Cruz to start a family and eventually raise their five children. Robert rejoined his Family's Business as a skipper. In 1964 Robert retired from skippering various boats to manage his Family's newest venture, Malio's Restaurant (named for his Uncle) which was also located on the wharf. He worked alongside his brother Joe and sisters Mary and Lindy. In 1972 Robert's family torn down their old sport fisherman's coffee shop located at the center of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf and replaced it with a new one named for Robert's sister Gilda. With the sale of Malio's Restaurant, Robert joined his sister Gilda in 1979 to help manage Gilda's Restaurant, which is still owned and operated by Robert's sons Dino and Malio. Robert and Gilda worked together every day for almost 30 years until Gilda's sudden passing in 2008. His greatest joy was serving the people of Santa Cruz and beyond. Whether he was seating people or bartending he always greeted you with a smile and warm "Welcome Aboard". He loved to reminisce about old time Santa Cruz and often spoke to school and senior groups about the history of his family along the Santa Cruz Waterfront.
When not at the wharf Robert enjoyed gathering his children and grandchildren together for weekly Sunday night dinners. He was a member and past president of the Santa Cruz Host Lions Club, Santa Cruz Elks Lodge, lifelong collector of Bing Crosby music and memorabilia, not to mention a diehard New York Yankee Fan.
Robert is survived by his three sons, Malio Stagnaro, Bill Stagnaro and Dino Stagnaro (daughter in law Annette), his two daughters Leta Stagnaro and Laura Stagnaro Paz (son in law Trin), Grandson Zachary Stagnaro, Honorary Grandchildren, Christen, Kyle and Isaiahs Goody, his beloved "Sugar Baby" sister Yolanda "Lindy" Dunn, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years Joan Brookman Stagnaro in 1988, granddaughter Amber Stagnaro in 1981 , parents Cottardo and Battistina Stagnaro, his 4 brothers Babe, Dodie, Stago and Joe, his 4 sisters Mary, Chella, Betty and Gilda.
Robert's family would like to thank Hospice of Santa Cruz County for their love and support over the last 6 months. They also would like to thank his at home care givers Rolando, Victor, and Rosa for providing him with so much love, help and support in his final months and days. To the numerous family members and friends who would stop by or call to check on our Dad, your love for him meant so much to us all. A public visitation is scheduled for Thursday May 31, 2012 from 2pm to 7pm at Benito Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga Street in Santa Cruz. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in Robert's memory to Hospice of Santa Cruz County 940 Disc Dr Scotts Valley, Ca 95066. In 1973, I had arrived from New York to live with my brother. Big Boy promised my brother he would give me a job in the kitchen at Malios. I became friendly with Billy, who also worked in Malios kitchen. Because of the opportunity I was given by Big Boy, I went on to be a successful chef, then a chef/manager, raised 5 children and had a good life. I am extremely sorry for his passing and beautiful Santa Cruz lost a legend and a man many people owe so much.

After Gilda's passing, you brought back the warm, inviting atmosphere she helped to create. I was content even to hear you speaking across the room to other patrons. I miss those stories and your voice.

So sorry to learn of your loss. I knew Big Boy and Joanie in the early 50's. Big Malio stayed with my grandfather on weekend liberty in San Diego when he was stationed at Camp Del Mar. Later Robert and Joanie rented a place there close to my grandfathers' place, and my brothers and I saw them regularly. Great fond memories of two wonderful people and a great family. I remember Malio would grab me in a bear hug and say, "Hiya Jimmy" and give me his stubble beard rub as I squealed for mercy !

We have been coming to Gilda's for many, many years and you were always so warmly greeted by Gilda or Big Boy; never was there a "bad day"...the food, service and their smiles, made it even more special. We gave Gilda the book on Alfred Hitchcock's films in this area; and showed her where Mr. Hitchcock said it was his favorite restaurant. Now all 3 can enjoy each other's company and greet the new visitor's in heaven....you have provided Heaven on earth for us as Dino and the rest of your family bring the same smiles and great food. You are missed but never forgotten.

"Big Boy" - If life holds a few regrets now and then, mine is that I did not spend more time on the wharf where I grew up with all of you. And also that I was not able to visit you just "one more time" before you passed. I have so many childhood memories of the wharf thanks to my dad Lawrence Zolezzi and you, Stago, Joe, Dody, Gilda and everyone...I have pictures for memories also. So my dear one you opened your heart and restaurant to my dear brother Larry for his 80th Birthday before he passed and we celebrated well thanks to you and all who served us that special day. Growing up in the 40's and 50's was such a gift and I treasure every hug and moment you and I shared over the years - may you be at peace and in the company of the other angels who have gone before you. Always in my heart and memory. Love you, Judy Zolezzi

I was a bus boy at Malio's 1966-1968. Big Boy was The Host and made us all feel like we were part of his Family. When I left for UC Santa Barbara he had a going away party for me and drafted a special letter of reference to obtain a job in Santa Barbara, all without my asking. He was very special. He will always remain Big Boy with a Big Smile! Rest in Peace my friend.

For the Family Stagnaro and many friends of Robert....Don and I, when we lived in SCrz often went to the wharf for lunch or dinner at either Malio's or Gilda's where they never failed to greet, hug and talk with us. The most delightful and smiling people we ever met. We were always so sad to hear of those we knew now taking their long and final breaks. Though Don is gone as well[11/2010], I'd like to extend from both of us our deepest sympathies to you all.

Having worked as a waitress at Malio's for several summers(in my early years of teaching), I felt welcomed and supported by your family and its' business. He will certainly be missed by the Santa Cruz Community. Love and condolences to your entire family.

Dino, Sending love to you and your entire family. Just read of your father's passing. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by so many. When i first walked into the bar at Gilda's I heard "Bing" and a man, short of stature, but BIG of heart, with the most amazing twinkle in his eyes greeted me- that was so many years ago, but in my heart, it was just yesterday.... How I loved to eat at the bar so that I could chat with Robert. My husband and I came to be known by Big, as "Salmon and French Dip" we never ate anything else. I loved that he called us that, and every single time he took our order, he would chuckle- "Come on you two, have the Prime Rib, Spagehtti" he'd say. I also remember when Gilda's installed the "Computer" and how he mastered it so well- And the ball games, and watching the weather, the sunsets, and always listening to "Bing"... I can't hear "Bing" without imagining Big Boy- He was such a true gentleman- I was so saddened when Gilda passed on, and now, my heart is even more broken. We were so lucky to have known him! I send big hugs to Dino and Malio, and family. How very blessed your were to be able to call him "Dad", and how lucky we all have been to share a piece of him, and your family in our hearts..... I send you HUGE HUGS... Can you feel them??

Unseasonable cold weather blew into Santa Cruz on Friday May 25th and took away our Robert. He would have wanted a bigger storm, like the one which carried Gilda Home. But, as he has been saying, Santa Cruz isn't getting the big ocean blows anymore. Not like in 1946 or even '82. I will miss my friend Robert for his quick smile and affection and his love of all things Wharf-Beach-Sea. He was Santa Cruz's best ambassador, shaking hands, giving hugs, sharing stories and feeding the millions of people who came through the door of Gilda's from all over the world. But, he gave his special attention and his heart to the people of Santa Cruz. To talk with Robert more than once was to invite him into your family or gathering of friends. He would remember every name and ask about the children or whoever wasn't present this time. He was a most charming man filled with Old World courtesy and New World friendly curiosity. Santa Cruz has seemed a bit more overcast and colder this past week. I miss my friend.
My heartfelt condolence and deepest sympathy to Dino, Malio and all family members whom he loved and who loved him. "Woo Wee Grandpa", he loved you all. No one who knew him could ever forget him. A special man born in a special place at a special time.
Vaya Con Dios, mi Amigo.
And Thanks.

To The Robert "Big Boy" Stagnaro Family...I was shocked and deeply saddened hearing of Roberts passing. Immediately memories of days long gone by passed before me as if instant replay. I was a little boy holding my Nona's hand walking down the old wharf with the fishing nets stretched across. Nona or Mama Marcenaro as she was called by Malio, Dottie, Big Boy and Gilda and the list goes on. We were on our way to the Miramar my Uncle Charlie's restaurant where she made raviolis. On our way home we were always stopped at the fish market where she was given a package of fresh fish. Eventually I worked there and became closer to this fine, iconic Stagnaro family. Many time dinning at Malios, the coffee shop and then Gilda's'. What a colorful and wonderful time. I don't think many people know how much good this Stagnaro family did for this community. I went away from Santa Cruz for a number of years and when I returned and went to Gilda's she and Big Boy greeted me so very warmly, as if I had never left. Robert would go into his routine of the Manasa Mauler. Malio? Ah the sweet memories. Robert was a fine gentleman and always treated people with dignity and respect. God has welcomed him with open arms. Of that I am sure. My prayers go out to your family with due respect and love.

Vaya con Dios. "Big Boy!" Both my brother Greg and I, spent our teenage years, back in the 70's-working on the wharf at Gilda's. I have many fond memories of fishing off their boats, and lively discussions with Robert, debating who was the better ball team. The A's or the Yankees! All the Stagnaros were a fun and lively, kind people to work for. And I will always remember them.

Well Big Boy, you have joined your many family members who left our world in the Past, Give Malio a slap on the back and Gilda a big hug. We will miss your laugh along with the warm greeting in the early mornings on the Wharf when stopping by for coffee and a chat. Pattidawn "Fox" and Bill Horn.

I'm sorry for your loss. Some of my early child hood memories from the 50's are of your Dad and the rest of the Family as my Grandfather would take me to the pier to either go fishing or buy Friday nights dinner or my favorite lunch. May he rest in Peace, God Bless your family

He was a kind, gentle and generous man who lived life with the greatest gifts of all - good friends, a loving family, and a wonderful wife, Joan. We loved him. We'll miss him.

My mom worked with Robert at Malio's for years, and though she loved the entire Stagnaro family, he was her very favorite. I'll miss having a drink with him at Gilda's every time I returned to Santa Cruz, and hearing his stories of their wonderful friendship. I like to think they are together in heaven now, along with their many friends.

A page is turned in the history of the Santa Cruz wharf. Robert was a memorable, iconic gentleman and wonderful friend to all of us who were regular customers of Gilda's over the years. I will miss his hearty welcome, big hug and warm smile every time I came to visit.
With deepest sympathy,
Patsy (his friend in Paris)

To Stagnaro family,
Robert was an amazing man and had a wonderful and long life. Seeing Robert always made me smile. He gave me open arms when I started working at Gildas. He was a perfect man and now an angle may he rest in peace.
He will always be in my heart.

I'll always have the best memories of growing up on Gharkie St. with Big Boy and Joanie right across the street from my Nonnie and Uncle Louie. All of us kids ran around like wild things with no cares, eating Joanies great cookies!! Having lost Mom last year was devastating, but our extended family of Stagnaro's helped us through it. We will love them through this. Big Boy will be greatly missed and certainly never replaced on the wharf! Another of that special generation gone from us. All my love to Malio, Billy, Leta, Dino and Laura.

I will still get that model of the Stag speedboat done you and your brother used to run during the summer. When it's done I will see you standing next to it with that million dollard Italian stallion smile. God bless you Big Boy. You and Gilda are up there together now. I hope we qualify for the trip up so we can dine with you both..

Farewell Big Boy! I remember going on one of your family's fishing boats, working at Malio's and so much more. This has me reflecting on the passing of Ted Whiting, Bill Fravel, Big Boy and so many from that great generation that was SC's waterfront. You all made life better for us who were raised there in the 60's. Thank you!
