Scott Searl Obituary

Scott Richard Searl
Jan. 30, 1946 - April 26, 2016
38 Year Resident
of Santa Cruz
Scott Richard Searl died peacefully on April 26, 2016 after battling a rare brain disease that cut short his life but not his soul. Born on January 30, 1946 to Catherine and John Searl, Scott is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila Siegel, who was by his side throughout his illness and until his dying breath, along with his cranky cat, Richard Parker (aka Fuzz) who remained on his bed and on top of Scott as his devoted pet.
Scott was raised in Los Angeles, before making Santa Cruz his home. He was an intelligent, accomplished, and highly skilled Physician Assistant, starting his career at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Emergency Room, where he worked for many years. His profession continued at Watsonville Community Hospital Emergency Room, and finally with Palo Alto Medical Foundation Urgent Care. In 1985 Scott spent a year in Sudan working for an urgent care clinic.
He retired in 2015.
Scott was a passionate and beautifully elegant skier, a hiker, biker, scuba diver, an avid outdoor and all - around athlete and an intrepid traveler. Scott and Sheila traveled the world, filling their home with treasures and memories from their varied and exotic trips. Scott looked forward to the winters with zest and zeal, always in search of the perfect powder day. But most of all Scott was gentle, loving, sweet, kind, and loyal. He could always be counted on by his buddies, especially to meet them at the Palomar, one of his favorite Santa Cruz hang-outs.
Scott will be sorely missed and Sheila is indebted to her and Scott's many friends and Santa Cruz family for being by their sides throughout this trying ordeal. There are no thanks sufficient to express her gratitude.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Scott's life will be held on Sunday, May 1, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Beit Olam Cemetery, 550 Old San Jose Road in Soquel. Donations can be made to The Teen Kitchen Project, or to Grey Bears of Santa Cruz.

I was saddened to hear of Scott's passing. I had the privilege of working with Scott at Watsonville Community Hospital, when I was an ER technician from 1989 to 1993. I enjoyed working with him and remember his kindness, patience, compassion and good bedside manner, even when working with difficult and cranky patients. Rest in peace Scott. You may not have realized it at the time, (nor did I) but you helped pass on a good example of how to treat patients of every stripe; from the mildly sick to gravely ill, from the cooperative patient to the crankiest non-compliant patient. You were nice to them all. This paramedic (of 22 years) says "thank you".

I am so sorry for your loss Sheila. I don't believe we ever met but I was a classmate of Scott's in PA school. He was without a doubt the sweetest, smartest, gentle man I have ever known. And if I'm not mistaken, I was the one who introduced Scott to skiing. As PA students, we would have sick days at Big Bear and come back to class with raccoon eye sunburns. Then Scott became a great skier and I didn't. Scott bought a van back then and we all went out and listened to Hotel California. I think of him every time I hear it. Along with Mike Sherwood we were all three pretty close and had some great times together. And without a doubt he was the smartest of us all. What a loss to you, the Santa Cruz community and the PA profession that he represented so well. He made us all proud and will be sorely missed.

Scott was our friend through his PA school years and after. Scott truly was the kindest, nicest loving man we knew. He and my husband Steve and Mike Sherwood had many great times together and we will never forget him. We are so happy to hear he had so many wonderful years with his wife, traveling and just having fun. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Linda and Steve Klompus
