Terrell Thomas Obituary

Terrell Lynn Thomas November 3, 1947 - February 26, 2014 Resident of Santa Cruz, CA Terrell Lynn Thomas, Musician, DJ, personality. Terrell Lynn Thomas - "The Man Who Saved Virginia City"! (per Virginia City Register, July 2005) Kevin Randick: When I first met Terrell, at 13, he was an avid long distance bike rider, racer and later a speed skater. In High School, we learned how to surf together. Again, he became an avid and accomplished surfer. A hobby he embraced all through high school and beyond. At 15 Terrell got into music. He played guitar, mainly folk, but ventured into other forms as well, ie. blues. Artist, Terrell was a natural artist. What came natural to him, other people had to work on to succeed. He had a wonderful sense of humor and engaged people with such a kind way. He had a sincere interest in other people's lives. Another mutual friend called and reminded me about Terrell's infectious laugh. He was an avid reader, always up to date on politics and world affairs - a virtual encyclopedia in many facets of music. I am so honored, among all his many friends in music, to have been willed his base guitar. Anne Steinhardt ("Pele Voodoo"): My most vivid picture of Terrell Lynn Thomas is back in the 60's, when Santa Cruz, not yet bustling and gentrified, was the West Coast epicenter of a magical era that crashed on the harsher realities of the 70's. Back then he was as handsome as a god, tall, slender, with straight, shoulder length rock star blonde hair. But outshining the classic good looks was the radiance of a deeply sweet soul.Together with a variegated assortment of hippy housemates, artists and musicians all, we shared a farmhouse at the end of Golf Club Drive, known as Rancho Retardo, the foremost commune in Santa Cruz, notorious for its' nudist lifestyle and wild parties featuring psychedelic smoothies. A roller skating fad had seized our merry gang, and my standout image of Terrell Lynn, he is wearing shoe skates backstage while my band Jango was on break, probably the old Catalyst or White Buffalo. I can see him as if it were yesterday, lithe and graceful, gliding around the band room. Down the years we also spent weeks together in a peripatetic house party and jam session in Nevada's Black Rock desert (long before Burning Man) at a kind of Rancho Retardo annex in the high desert called "Planet X". Terrell loved the surreal solitude and beauty so much he moved there. We'd been out of touch for awhile when the news came that he'd suffered a stroke. Last year friends from all over the country reunited in Harvey West Park to celebrate another iconic Santa Cruz watering hole, United Bar. Limping slowly towards me, leaning on a cane, came a portly figure, face and body somewhat off kilter. But transcending the damaged shell, his Terrell Lynn radiance still dazzled in the warm sweetness of his smile, in the loving, positive spirit surrounding him like a force field. Now, I picture him, slim and erect once more, roller skating around the Big Band Room in the sky. Gilbert Klein ("Fatchance"): Terrell Lynn Thomas passed away Wednesday morning Feb. 26,2014 after a three- day "cold". Born in Fort Ord, California, and having been in the National Guard, Terrell Lynn had been working for the phone company when he accompanied a friend to KFAT, a struggling radio station in Gilroy and came home with a DJ job. He knew the traditional as well as contemporary country music and was a formative voice in the distinctive, unique sound of the station. Many friends and fans will remember his soft voice, his musical historical knowledge, and his natural, excellent musical instincts. After KFAT, Terrell Lynn remained active in the music scenes in Santa Cruz, the Bay Area, and Virginia City, NV and several other northern Nevada cities.. Terrell Lynn suffered health issues, but remained a valued friend to all who knew him. Clearly a man of the Sixties, Terrell Lynn embodied all the best of the period, remaining upbeat and always willing to help a friend or to play or talk about music. KFAT was the template for what became known as Americana Music, which is currently the fastest-growing music category in the United States, and Terrell Lynn Thomas was one of its pioneers. He is survived by many friends, fans and his sweetheart, Catherine Hogan of Santa Cruz. Post Stroke: I saw you under that Hat. I heard you'd been a dj and my inner 13 year old thought "ooh, he's famous!" I heard you were a musician and my inner 15 year old groupie thought, "ooh, Heee's a musician!" I fell head over heals. your Catherine Memorial Services: 3/16/14 The Ponderosa, 6pm, Virginia City, NV, 3/17/14 Bev's Minor's Club, 6pm, Gerlach, NV, Tribute: 5/24/14 - venue - tba, 1-6pm, Santa Cruz, CA In Terrell Lynn Thomas's name, donations may be made to the Cabrillo Community College Stroke Center, 6500 Soquel Dr., Aptos, CA

The first time we met it was one of Cathy's St. Pat's parties and you were listening to Django Reinhard & I knew Cathy was on to something. We're still missing you. Make a quick visit. It would mean so much to Cathy.

"You bring me all your sunsets
You finish me..."
I awoke from a dream of Terrell Lynn pouring out his heart in poetry to his deep love Cathy Hogan, and these two sweet lines are the taste of the poetry I can recall. But I still remember his love and devotion and deep happiness as he spoke in the dream.
I didn't know him for long and really very little compared with his many friends. I am an old friend of Cathy's and when I was in town Terrell Lynn would tend to stay quiet and let us girls gab. But he was a loving safe presence in Cathy's life, a wonderful good humored companion who appreciated her true self and saw her through good times and bad.
Cathy showed me a picture of him in his young manhood just very recently and I saw him in a different light, and wished I had known him all the way since then till now for who he was.

My fondest memory of Terrell Lynn was sitting in a diner with him and honey and other friends. We had just come from the notary, where he assured us, it is good to get your last will and testament in order. That was in 2012. It was raining that morning and he was wearing the most outrageous red shoes! We ate bacon, eggs, toast and sweetened coffee. I remember thinking that spending time in a diner with friends is a good thing, because we can learn a lot about each other in conversation over comfort food. Although an organic natural foods junkie, I am in sentiment with the diner because it is such an American phenomenon. Diners are often open 24 hours a day, someone pours you unending cups of coffee. There is apple pie on the counter in covered display cases, the music is jute box style, and there is plenty of jam, jelly, and butter for everyone.
Terrell Lynn was like that. Generous with his talents, time, and spirit. Warm, sweet, and magnanimous with his musical talents. We will miss you, Terrell Lynn. And I will also miss the couple that Cathy and TL were: their lives intertwined in a life-supporting, nurturing way.

1965 Graduation Photo-San Mateo High School

I knew Lynn Thomas when we both went to San Mateo High School. He graduated in 1965 and I was a lowly freshman but he and I hit it off with common interests in art, music and surfing. Lynn, never heard the Terrell first name, was a crazy contribution to the music scene at the school. He and this other guy would perforn folk songs for football and baseball pep rallies or just jam in the quad of the high school. The cool thing was they were our Smothers Brothers, brillantly weaving off color jokes and inundos into the lyrics which slipped right by the teachers and administrators. We surfed together at the Princeton Breakwater in Half Moon Bay and ruled the place. After he graduated I only saw him one more time a few years later on Union St. in San Francisco, playing his guitar with his case open for spare change. We talked for awhile and then it was, "Peace Brother, See you soon." That was the last time I know that I saw him. Now that I have followed these blogs I know that our paths crossed without us even realizing it. I too spent time at the Hayward House in San Mateo with Jim S. and long time friend to this day Wendy G. Jim S. did light shows for Bill Graham and Chet Helms and I helped with that. Also Rancho Retardo came into play. I also lived in South San Jose on a ranch in Evergreen with Christa Taylor who later was a DJ at KFAT. I even listened to "Terrell" having no idea it was my old buddy from high school....Seems strange now how close we were but never connected. Reminds us to be more open and aware. His music humor and outlook on life still affects my life and I wish I could have shared that with him....Peace, Brother....Fly on Little Wing....Bill Deline I am posting his 1965 graduation photo.

I met Terrell Lynn at the Cabrillo College Stroke Center as a student in my class and then later as the sweetheart of my beloved friend. As a student, he always stood up for others less mobile or as able as he, and always with a bit of humor and kindness and ease- a true heroic gift. As Cathy's sweetheart, he displayed a steadfast love that she will never let go of..... Terrell Lynn always had grand stories to tell and the grandest of hearts to share them with!! I'll always remember his heartiness and kindness.... I am grateful to have known him!!!

At Christmas this year, TL and I cracked a few beers and had a little heart to heart in the bustling midst of my parent's annual Christmas Party. TL told me he "should have been gone long ago", but that he had found a reason to stay put. "I think I'm gonna stick around a while longer" he said, "your Aunt Catherine has given me a reason to stay around a while. And your family has taken me in with such open arms, ya know? I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. This is worth sticking around for..."
He was such a remarkable man- everything from his big-ol' hat to his shiney silver knife earrings, to his infectious hearty cackle told you he was far from ordinary.
And after he took a long sip of beer that evening at my parent's house, he tossed his long hair over his shoulders and told me in no uncertain terms the impact that the love of a fierce Irish woman and her family had made on his life. And it melted my little heart into bits and pieces.

Terrell Lynn was an extraordinary and coveted addition to my family and I will miss him greatly.

It was a dark and stormy night, no wait! It became a warm and sunny day when Terrell Lynn showed up at the old Cabrillo Stroke Center, enlivening the scene for all of us with his too-tall standing tall presence, his gentle humor and great stories about everything from Bob Wills to life in the universe. He entertained us all at Viva in the summer too, and we all feel proud to have known him.
Fondly,

Well TL, you changed my life with one phone call in 1998. You called to tell me about a want ad in the local paper for a guitarist. I called, got the job and for the next 8 years it helped me get my kid thru UNR with a Degree in Electrical Engineering. Now that 24 year old is making $60 grand a year. It's the little things you did Pal. See you soon!

I'm awful sorry to hear this. I got to know TL toward the end of the KFAT era. I could count on a kind word and a charity laugh at my lame puns.

Give ol' Pigface a scratch on the belly for me, Terrell Lynn.

Well TLT, I know you are serenading everyone in the afterlife as sweetly as you did us'uns down here. Our lives diverged over the years, and our friendship had its quakes and quiets, but I'll always love you and remember your sweet voice.
Happy Trails, Compadre. We'll all miss you

I will always be grateful to you TL, for those encouraging talks in front of the pot belly at my cabin on Twin Lakes. Your infectious laugh and a life of comedy and errors are things people will write about you and here is a good place to start. See you again darling, just around the bend.

I met Lynn in San Mateo in 1972ish...I was visiting a friend and heard this most beautiful voice. I actually had to follow that voice to its source which was a few doors down in Hobart Arms apts. That started a freindship until I moved away shortly thereafter. He was so beautiful to hear and see and his peacefulness was always there. I have to share how I heard of his passing; I was upstairs in my home in Eureka putting together a quilt of old t-shirts. One was a KFAT t-shirt. I thought...'hmm I wonder if this is worth something. I'll google this...' Then I remembered faithfully listening to KFAT so that I might here my dear Terrel Lynn, so I googled him (wish I could hug him!) This is how I heard of his passing all these miles away. So strange that it was not long ago. I send my deepest sympathies to all of you who got to be a part of his life.

I met Lynn or "TT" back in the late 60's early 70's.He was tall with long blond hair, a warm spirit and always had his guitar with him. He was a wonderful friend to everyone. I was living up in the Sierras and he came and stayed with us for awhile one winter. I remember us walking through the snow and seeing coyotes behind us at a distance and Lynn saying how much he loved nature. In the early 70's he was living at the Hayward House in San Mateo, a small commune near Central Park. When I returned to the Bay Area and was looking for a place to live, Lynn talked to people in the house and I moved in. I lost touch with him over the years but recently his name had come up and some of us who still live around San Mateo were wondering how he was doing. As others mention he was a warm and loving soul, a special person who was gifted with music!

As Cathy's friend, I was greatful to TLT for the love he shared with her and how they complimented each other during their relatively short and extremely sweet time together. My heartfelt condolences go out to Cathy for her loss, and my sincere congratulations for her gain of having TLT in her life to love and cherish, and to be loved and cherished by him. I just drove TLT to his doctor's appointment on Feb. 4 and spent the morning with him, never suspecting it would be the last time I saw him in this lifetime. A good reminder to treat every day as if it were our last, and to treat everybody as if it might be the last time we see them. Let us love one another and make the world a better place. Happy Trails Terrell Lynn!
