I think of Bill almost every day. On my recent visit to Santa Cruz I visited with his wife Cynthia and we toasted Bill's memory. What an incredible person with such a deep understanding of the Universe and delightful sense of humor.

I´m deeply saddened to learn of Bill´s death (writing in January 2023). He was unfailingly kind and generous to me as a graduate student in music at UCSC (many years ago) and a wonderful mentor. I have plenty of fond memories of my time as his student and with the Antiquarian Funks, but the recollection that stands out at this moment was a chance encounter one day on a path on the UCSC campus. He stopped and greeted me with such warmth and obvious delight at our running into each other that my day was instantly brightened. I've never forgotten it. I know Bill touched many lives, and while it has been perhaps 20 years since I last saw him, he is missed. [email protected]

Cynthia, When I look up at the stars , when I ponder my place in the Universe, when I watch some silly bit on television or read a scientific article that I barely understand, I think of Bill. I can see his smile and hear him laugh. He was kind and humored me in my effort to understand various aspects of cosmology and to answer my questions. I will truly miss seeing him when Laura and I show up at your house at midnight. Love, Janet

Cynthia,
My sincerest condolences. Bill was one in a billion ... family man, scientist and incredible musician. It was an honor for me to be a part of the Funks and the Schola Cantorum Funkorum. When a service is scheduled, please reach out to me so I may attend. 831.901.5554 [email protected]

My opinion of Bill: a highly original theoretical astrophysicist who was always genuinely seeking the truth of the Universe. Also, one of the most likeable and lovable individuals I have been privileged to meet, whose affability and high ethical standards helped greatly to set a favorable tone in the newly founded astrophysical department at UCSC in the 1970's.
