Diana Stein Obituary

DIANA STEIN Diana Stein passed away at home on July 3, 2018 at the age of 91. Her life was enriched by the wonders of books, art and music and as an intrepid bookseller on the Santa Fe Trail, on the Old Town Plaza of Las Vegas, NM for more than fifty years. Originally hailing from the East, Diana came West and never looked back. She made New Mexico home in 1955 and settled in Las Vegas joining her husband, Joe Stein, who started La Galeria de Los Artesanos, as an art gallery on Moreno Street, in 1949. The Steins became specialists in Western Americana, in-and-out of print, with book customers from near and far seeking them out. At heart, Diana was an archivist whose correspondence with writers, historians, publishers, customers and the business records of the workings of an independent bookstore were donated to the Museum of New Mexico, Palace of the Governors, Fray Angelico Chavez History Library in 2004. Diana believed the architecture of the old buildings in Las Vegas worthy of saving and was a vocal voice for their preservation and renovation. Their own historic building that housed Los Artesanos, located at 220 N. Plaza, was once the law office of Louis C. Ilfeld built in 1921. They revitalized it maintaining its historic fabric beginning in the mid 1970's. Diana kept the bookshop going after Joe's passing in 2000, until she and the shop retired in 2005. Diana moved to Grants, on the Route 66 Mother Road, to share her older daughter, Sari's home for the past thirteen years. Daughter, Liz Higgins, lives in Las Cruces and visits Grants frequently. Diana did not wish a service, funeral, or memorial and was cremated. Libraries were significant in nurturing Diana's love of history, books and literature from a young age which continued throughout her lifetime. Remembrance of Diana may be made as a donation to your local library, museum, preservation or Main Street group. Cards may be sent to Sari Stein, PO Box 1322, Grants, NM 87020, to share with Liz and her two grown sons and five grandchildren.

I was a student at NMHU in the early 70's and have fond memories of my visits to La Galeria. I remember Diana reminiscing about her early childhood travel on trains and how wonderful the service was. In 2001 I discovered my mother's go-to cookbook "Historic Cookery" by Fabiola C. Gilbert was in tatters. To my surprise it was published by La Galeria. I wrote to Diana and asked if I could still get a copy. I still have my copy (I ordered two!) and the note she enclosed with it dated 4/27/01.

There isn't a part of my summers when I was visiting Estella's Cafe or growing up in Las Vegas that the Stein family aren't part of it. As I was growing up the love of books was always encouraged by the Steins. My first paying job was dusting books at Los Artisanos. To her family I am so sorry for your loss. I am at loss for words.

Diana and Joe meant the world to me when I was a kid growing up in Las Vegas. This isn't exaggerating -- they would always put me onto new books they thought I would like and introduced me to the world of reading and of bold writers and all that encouraged me out into the broader world. I've stopped by a couple of times over the years when I was in town to remind her how much she did for me. What a wonderful, inspiring woman!

So sorry to hear of Diana's passing.
I enjoyed visiting with her, having tremendously interesting discussions and sharing her love of books, cats and dogs.
I loved her letters and the pictures she used to mail.

I am grateful to our Lord for our Loved Ones presence in our lives, it was truly a blessing . My "Power of Faith" allows me to realize that the pain of the loss is for me. I won't have them to accompany me in life's journey any longer. and their memory is all we will have until we meet again. My pain is not for them. With my " Power of Faith", I believe with all my heart, that the joy they are feeling and the paradise they are now in, cannot be described in any earthly way. I pray for your strength, courage and above all "Faith" through this extremely difficult Time. My Condolence - Marke Montoya Santa Fe
