My deepest condolences to Don's family. Don's tragic death is like that of other great musicians taken from us suddenly by tragic vehicle accidents. As one who knew Don from an early age, I was also surprised to hear of the cause of his death, not knowing he had a passion for motorcycles. In reading that motorcycle riding was a source of joy for him, then maybe there is some comfort to be had in that he passed away doing something he loved to do - as sad as the thought can also be that that source of enjoyment was also taken from him in that same moment.
I can't remember exactly how I came to be introduced to Don, but it was so many years ago as teenagers and we eventually became band-mates in a band called High Voltage. As fellow guitar 'slingers' there was always a friendly rivalry between us though it extended beyond Don and I to other guitarists, yet we (Don and I), had a mutual respect and admiration for each other's musical gifts and talent. As a testament to Don's modesty and appreciation for other musicians, many years after the band broke up and we went our separate musical ways and I released a rock music CD that I'd given Don a copy of, Don mentioned to me that his son loved my music so much that he was always singing my songs and knew the words by heart, to paraphrase Don as best as can I remember those kind words and compliments.
Don was indeed a unique and specially gifted talented and hard-working guitarist / musician, a very humble person and dedicated family man. We were always promising to "get together" for a jam or to have me sit in at one of his gigs, but sadly that never happened. I still have fond memories of our guitar 'duals' in our live shows and our being distracted by the other's "guitar wizardry" in live performances as someone once described our playing.
Don was a man of faith and there is comfort to be had for those who know of his faith in that he is where the faithful wish to be when this short life we're allowed is over.
Rest in peace Don.

As a young boy I grew up with the Lovato's and spent a lot of time with them and as large as their family is, not once did they let me leave their home hungry. More than a dozen times Mr. Lovato got me and Leo out of trouble and he taught me right from wrong. I attribute some of the important life lessons I learned from Mr. Lovato and all the Lovato boys. I just found out about Don from an old friend Ron Apodaca; I grew up with Don and the Apodaca brothers (Ron, Don and Bob) in the Allan/Stamm neighborhood. We were all mesmerized by the music KVSF used to crank out, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, CCR, Beatles all that good stuff from back in the day. I used to hang out with Don and listen to his brother’s albums of the real non KVSF playing rock and roll, Johnny Winter, Cream, Jimi and the like. He had his acoustic back then learning the songs and the riffs that we rocked out to. It has been too many years, but the great memories are still there. I remember back in high school, there was a group of us, me, Leslie, JoAnn, Amy Jo, Nella, Butch, Ricky, Frizz, Bozo and of course Don. We were all inseperable. I remeber a really fun party at JoAnne's (down the street from Don's house on Camino Del Gusto), Don took out is Guitar and started playing "Smoke on the Water", we were all in Awe! Don truly was one of the best musicians I've known. I'm so so sad, but take solice that Don is in heaven with his brohter and he will forever be in my heart and thoughts. I hadn't seen Donald since he was a little boy living on Fifth Street, hanging out with my brother, Ralph. Because Don has touched all of our lives in such a positive way, it is at this time that we feel such a great loss of such a kind and loving human being. I've know Donnie for about thirty years, he and my older brother were friends and played music together. Donnie gave me my first guitar lessons about 18 years ago, and his teaching still influence my playing style to this day! I also enjoyed talking to him about the Lord, when ever he would come to our house to spray. We must remember that Don is still with us in many ways and his kindness and humor will not be soon forgotten. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his wife, children and family.

The Anaya family sends its most sincere condolences on the passing of Don! I've known Don for many years and have always known him to be a kind soul. As a fellow musician, I can say without a doubt, he was a master guitarist whom I admired. The last time I saw Don was at Tortilla Flats where he was performing with our primo Chris Abeyta. The only regret I have is not having the chance to jam with him and learn from him. I know if there is a rock and roll band in heaven, he's jamming with all the greats right now.

I had not seen you or your family in some time but have thought of you both at times. Don was always a great guy to me and he treated me with great respect and I will always remember him for that. Oh My Loving Brother how I'm going to miss you I remember you would go into your bedroom to practice your guitar and make it shread, even to the point when one time the bridge broke and sliced your arm pretty bad! Margarette ,Everette, Jessye and the whole Lovato Family ! Theres no words words have no meaning ! Only love and understanding through Gods Grace can we hold on. Don was like a brother to me. Don married my sister Margarette when I was 10. they fell madly in love with each other they were soulmates . He had such a gentle spirit for all those he came into contact with. He was a true man who loved God and his family and would do anything for them. Don was so talented he mastered the guitar, he gave Santana a run for his money. Don you were a good Husband to my sister and a great father to your children. May Our LORD continue to keep his arms around you all during this Most difficult time! Don truly was a genuine man with a great talent for music. We trusted Don to enter our home without anyone being there to spray for the "bugs" and would leave him a check on the table. Unheard of in today's world! I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I met Don more than 24 years ago, as he we were his client for pest control. We also enjoyed going to La Fonda and dancing to his music. My wife and I were also classmates of your son Jerry. Although I did not know your sons very well, I had the priviledge of knowing that they were very fine men. My deepest condolences.

My deepest sympathies to the family. Don was a wonderful man. He was always so happy and nice to everyone. I remember him going to my aunts to spray the house and if I wasn't at school he would give me the go to school lecture. My daughter and I talked about him last night and she remembers him waking her up just to say hello when he would go spray the house. He will be dearly missed. He now is our guardian angel watching over all of us with his gracious spirit. You will never be forgotten Don.

I remeber his love of riding and playing his guitar back when we were frinds. This was such sad news. Don did pest control for my parents for decades and over the years, our whole family grew to know him. He was such a cheerful, upbeat, and positive person. I loved hearing him greet me with his enthusiastic, "how are you? How are your husband and kids?" He played at my wedding as well as my sister's. He was such a wonderful person and my family was incredibly saddened to hear the news. He's up in heaven now making beautiful music. Our prayers are with his family.
