GEORGE AMOS Obituary

GEORGE WILFRED AMOS
George Wilfred Amos, PhD, was born in Montgomery, Alabama on August 23, 1937, and passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on October 24, 2022. He was the son of Dr. And Mrs. Hobart P. Amos. His father was a Baptist minister and George was raised in the Baptist church.
He started his formal education at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where he joined the Arkansas Student Union and worked tirelessly in leadership positions within the student organization. Through his affiliation with the Arkansas Student Union, George made lifelong friendships which he cherished throughout his life. In addition to Arkansas State University, George is the alumnus of the University of Florida and the University of Arkansas where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Doctorate in English Literature.
George was a man of many talents. Being the scholar he was, anything he undertook was studied and researched thoroughly. He was a gifted photographer and writer of prose, poetry, and he especially loved satire. He used these skills throughout His life in his work.
George was a professor of English Literature at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana and served as head of the English Department at Louisiana College in Pine ille, Louisiana for 10 years prior to his move to New Mexico.
In 1978, George and his wife Donna moved to New Mexico where George became a Realtor with the Santa Fe Association of Realtors. He enjoyed a successful career for over 40 years and during that time he was honored as realtor of the year.
George was gifted in adobe design and used his skills in the renovation of his home to create a classic structure reflecting the beauty of New Mexico design. He also created a unique mountain cabin in the mountains above Santa Fe.
George loved to travel the world and he and his wife were married in Interlaken, Switzerland in 1968. He was a tireless hiker and alumnus of Outward Bound where he was introduced to backpacking, and he and his wife, Donna explored wilderness areas throughout the western United States.
George loved and lived life to the fullest. His wife of 54 years always said that living with
George was like living in Disneyland because there was always something exciting happening. George touched many lives with his kindness and tireless desire to be of help to anyone in need. He was an avid reader and especially loved the history of WWII.
George was preceded in death by his beloved Australian Shepherd, Buster. He is survived by his wife, Donna and cat, Lassie Elizabeth Coco.
There will be a memorial service on November 10 at 11:30 at the Church of the Holy Faith in Santa Fe.

Oh gosh I loved having George as a work neighbor for decades! It was always such a joy to see him and have a brief visit about Just about everything. Also got to get a dog hello in now and then too. I wish now that I had had longer visits and that I had asked him about more of his experiences. I will miss him and I send my sincerest condolences to Donna and his many friends.

George was a prince of a man married to my sister Donna Payne, who treated her like a queen for 54 years. They traveled all over Europe & many other countries before he decided to leave the teaching profession at Louisiana College & move to New Mexico & become a very successful real estate broker. He always had visions that he believed in. He wrote a poem for my very young grandson that was fascinated with airplanes which i frequently read and enjoy to this day. I loved the man, and will always have a hole in my soul because he is not here.

Respectfully Submitted,
Phillip E. Payne

George was a bright light, and he always had a smile for me. I had the good fortune to office next to George and Donna for several years during Obama's tenure in office. George always brought me bags and candles for holiday Luminarias. We'd talk about books we'd read and I remember telling him about my mother serving at Pearl Harbor as a nurse from the attack to the end of the war, and of my Uncle, who served under Jimmy Doolittle when the troops marched from North Africa and up through Italy, before the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I think George and I shared a need to understand how people lived thru/survived this terrible time in our history. George was a good man. He was caring, funny as all get out, kind, really smart and very clever. We met as members of the Independent Brokers Network and I am grateful to have known him. He will be missed. Donna, my heartfelt condolences.

Donna, both Rusty and I loved sweet George! He was truly one of a kind. His gracious heart was open to everyone! I will never forget when he nominated me and presented me with an award from the SFAR. He faithfully delivered fariltios to me every Christmas...Always saying thank you...I would have done anything for him in the 34 years we worked in real estate together. You were a blessed woman and I know He was a blessed man! My love goes out to you in this time of your great loss.

Have so many wonderful memories of George (and Donna) - enjoyed working with George for over 20 years. Big heart, generous with his humor, knowledge and hospitality, he was a bright light. He was a truly ethical and professional Realtor and in all ways a wonderful human being. I am only one of so many who will miss him. Sending love and heartfelt condolences to Donna and George's family.

I never had Dr Amos for a class, but his enthusiasm could permeate the walls at LC. I had some contact with him 2010-20 and always appreciated his humor. He will be missed.

I thoroughly enjoyed my classes with Dr. Amos as a student at Louisiana College. He was very animated and made the literature come alive. I have a great memory of him jumping on his desk and yelling to make a point about an Orwell book we were studying! A great educator, I was fortunate to know him.
