MARK BOLSTERLI Obituary

MARK BOLSTERLI Mark Bolsterli, 81, died on May 19, 2012 of complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was born on October 3, 1930 to Frances Hipple and Arthur Mark Bolsterli in New Haven, Connecticut. He is survived by his wife, Judy Costlow; his two sons: David Bolsterli, Eric Bolsterli and his partner, Claire West; his sister, Margaret Evans and husband, Jim; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. His life was one of adventure, intellectual pursuits, and love of music. Mark reached the level of Eagle Scout in high school in Webster Groves, MO. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Washington University in St Louis in 1955. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to England in 1955, a fellowship to the Niels Bohr Institute in 1961 and was a Guggenheim Fellow to Oxford in 1964. Mark was a Professor of Physics at the University of Minnesota for ten years before joining the Theoretical Physics Division (T9) at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1968 where he worked until his retirement in 1991. His contributions were extensive in the field of physics and can be found in the many scientific papers he published over his long career. He met his wife, Judy, on the ski slopes of the Santa Fe Ski Basin in 1971. Together they skied, hiked, and bicycled in many parts of the world. In 1981, they spent 8 months in Switzerland, the home of his father, where he worked at the Scientific Lab CERN. In 1992 he worked for the National Science Foundation in Washington DC overseeing grants in the physics field. He played the piano, spoke 6 languages, played squash most days in his healthy years, studied ancient Greek, read voraciously, loved classical music, opera, the Lensic Performing Arts Center where he ushered for almost 10 years, and crossword puzzles he did in ink. He hiked locally with the Chili and Marching Society, bicycled with the SOB's (Seniors on Bikes) and skied every chance he could. He never stopped looking for adventures. His last year was spent in the loving hands of the El Castillo Medical Center staff. There will be a remembrance of his life on Friday, June 29th at 2 p.m. in the El Castillo Community Room. His favorite charities were Washington University in St Louis, MO, The Boy Scouts of America, and locally, the Santa Fe Conservation Trust, the Lensic Theater, and the Santa Fe Opera.

I used to pay GO with Mark, about 30 years ago. He was always better than I, but always kind about it. I have fond memories of that time, and am sad to learn that he has passed.

I knew Mark from skiing and enjoyed his company and excellent skiing equally. I missed him in the last few years as his illness worsened, but when I did see him he was always "up". I regret and am saddened by his passing.
