Michael Sperberg-McQueen Obituary

MICHAEL SPERBERG-MCQUEEN
Michael Sperberg-McQueen, suddenly, on August 16, 2024.
Michael was born to Lawrence and Miriam Culler Sperberg in Borger, Texas, on May 18, 1954. He grew up in El Paso. A year spent as an exchange student in Hanover, Germany, after high school helped shape his life. He attended Stanford, where he was able to pursue a wide range of interests, from mathematics, to drama, to medieval literature and computing. He met Marian at Stanford, and they married in 1979. In about 1982 he became the first humanities computing consultant at Princeton University. In 1986 he and Marian relocated to Chicago where he became a co-editor of the Text Encoding Initiative. He was passionate about developing tools that would ensure the digital preservation of cultural heritage. Michael and Marian returned to the southwest in 1999 to live in the house her father built south of Española, and Michael began working for the World Wide Web Consortium. In 2008 he began his own IT consulting firm, Black Mesa Technologies. He traveled frequently to conferences world wide and was for many years a co-chair of the annual Balisage conference, where his closing remarks were always much anticipated. He enjoyed especially a semester as a visiting professor at the Program in Digital Humanities at the Technical University Darmstadt, Germany, in 2015. In the aftermath of the 2016 election he desperately wanted to help return the country to its senses. As always, he did the research, which told him he could be most effective thinking nationally but acting locally. His engagement in progressive politics in Rio Arriba County and New Mexico brought him much stimulation and satisfaction, and many friends.
Michael had a prodigious memory, a keen intelligence, and an extraordinary range of interests. Reading was almost as important as breathing to him; intellectual engagement with others was his great joy. He believed that no knowledge is useless, and no person lacks knowledge. He was a big man with a big heart and a gift for friendship.
Michael was preceded in death by his mother and father and by his brother Ron. He leaves his wife, Marian, his step-mother, Elvira, and his siblings Barb, Nancy, Roger, Fritz, Oliver, Rosa, Rudy, and Flora. Also his beloved dog, Beabos, and felines Curt, Fussbudget, and Cholmondeley.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, the Espanola Valley Humane Society, or any ActBlue cause or candidate. Arrangements for a memorial gathering are pending.

Dear Marian, My name is Ana Alicia Ortiz. I was a high school schoolmate of Michael's and a friend. His kindness and intelligence and support for my creativity greatly influenced my life and the great success i was able to achieve in my acting career. He actually published my first poem in our HighSchool newspaper. He was a friend I not only admired but was so so fond of. He truly was so kind to me. My heart is with you and his family. If you would like to get in touch here is my email: [email protected]. I would love to set up a call. Anyone that loved Michael, I know I would love. My prayers and thought are with you. He will be much in my heart. I so wish we could have stayed in touch. Life moves so quickly. Ana Alicia

Michael was a dear colleague and a member of the New Mexico Resistance Action Group, as were Liz Gold, Lee Goodwin, Debbie Denison, and I. We gathered collaborators and concerned citizens regularly at our homes, especially in the years of 2017 and 2018, supporting initiatives on health care, elections, toxic spraying, climate change and alternative energy sources, and more. For the years thereafter when NM Resistance focused on collaborations with Indivisible, Retake Our Democracy, and other groups, our friendships continued, with smiles and caring.

Michael was a brilliant, gifted, and humble person, who redefined the term gentle giant. Despite his commitments on many fronts both professionally and as an activist volunteer, he took the time to listen and understand the nuances of a challenge and persisted and showed up repeatedly in his committed way. His home with his beautiful and welcoming wife Marian made all feel at ease and comfortable, including the many animals they took in and cared for. Those were such heartening years of collaboration and caring for us all. Michael stands out in our work and is sorely missed and greatly appreciated for his commitment to relationship and a better functioning and compassionate community. Dear Michael, thank you for you and what you gave us all. It is hard to imagine our world without your physical presence.

Roxanne and I were so saddened to have just found out of Michael´s passing. He was an absolutely invaluable volunteer with Retake Our Democracy since its inception. He took on any task reliably and with good humor. More than that Michael was a person grounded in progressive ideals who cared deeply about bettering the lives of others. He was one of those rare souls who consistently put his ideals into practice through his activism and nearly daily appearance at the NM state legislature, speaking at legislative hearings and working the halls to lobby legislators. A great man who will be dearly missed and long remembered by many.

Michael generously and patiently directed his great expertise and wide knowledge to a project whose chance of success at times looked to be slight, always with encouragement and good humor. It was a privilege for me to have been associated with him over the course of many decades. His passing is a great shock to me, as I know it is to so many.
