Tom Crawford Obituary

TOM CRAWFORD Tom Crawford, poet and teacher, died on May 29, 2018. The cause was lymphoma, complicated by pneumonia. He was the author of nine books of poetry, including Lauds, The Temple on Monday, The Names of Birds, and Caging the Robin. He was the recipient of the Pushcart Prize, Foreword Book of the Year, and the Oregon Book Award, among others, and Fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been widely published in journals and anthologies. Tom was a birder, a contemplative, an activist, an enthusiast, and a loving father, whose writing infused with Eastern thought and a sense of mysticism, explored the natural world and our complex connection to it. Born in Flint, Michigan, in 1939, he grew up in the Kern Valley, California. He joined the Navy at 17, was educated at Sacramento State University and taught at colleges and universities throughout the western U.S., in China, and for six years in South Korea. He spent many years living in the Pacific Northwest and was a resident of Santa Fe for 13 years with his partner, Mary A. Judge, who survives him; also his daughter, Jenny (Aston) Case and two grandsons.

Tom Crawford and I met in prison...while teaching classes at Oregon State Penitentiary in the 1980s. We hit it off. It was a fortuitous coming together of artist and writer. We spent time together at his small house in Farmer Creek-a magic cabin nestled in the woods near a creek where salmon swam. Or, he stayed with my wife and I at our place in McMinnville. He was making ends meet, and at some point headed off to Korea. We exchanged letters. In time I lost track of his very unique and special comet. But I never lost Tom in my heart. He was that way. He radiated a very bright and spirited light that I will never forget. Thanks Tom. You and your poetry made us wealthy. Peace Bro. Ride Easy.

Grateful I am to have been influenced by the purity and guts of Tom Crawford's teaching wisdom and style. Suddenly tonight I thought to look him up, with the sense that he may have recently left this earth .

Forty years since I last saw you. And through you I learned that objects and creatures regarded specifically in the light and shadow of loving regard will open to reveal the eternal.

Maybe the best teacher this seeker ever encountered. You taught me that in itself, to love is a gift.

Tom introduced me to, or I should say, infected me with poetry in the early 70's at Solano Community College, CA. I took every class I could get with him. The infection is still with me today and Tom remains one of my favorite poets. It is a lesser world without him, but his voice still speaks through his many, wonderful books. RIP, Tom. You are finally flying!
