Arthur C. Guzman

1953 - 2021

Arthur C. Guzman, 68, died December 22, 2021, following a short illness. He is survived by a multitude of wives, kids, grandkids, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, all of whom provided fodder for his famous storytelling and sense of humor.

Art will be remembered throughout the Santa Maria Valley for his years of volunteer work with the Kiwanis Club and, maybe more prominently, for his decades of involvement with the Central Coast Officials Association, and Northern Channel Coast Officials Association.

Over the years, it had become nearly impossible for Art to take a simple trip to the Home Depot or enjoy pancakes at the Cracker Barrel without running into a half-dozen folks who'd remember him as the referee of their junior high or high school basketball games. Usually fondly.

Art was both an avid gardener and an unabashed over-feeder of both dogs and people. A proud and loving father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend. A giant personality in a compact body, and a natural entertainer.

Perhaps his proudest performance was the innovation of his Onion Ring Trick. First, find an onion ring. Next, remove all fried-breading until all that remains is one long, soggy strip of onion. Hide long, soggy onion strip in hand until moment is right. Then, execute trick: fake a loud sneeze and dangle long, soggy onion from nose as though it is a long, soggy ... snot.

Note: Trick is best performed in the context of a fancy steakhouse dinner and in the company of many, many small children.

If you knew Art, you'd likely heard this story. And its just as likely that you'd heard or were witness to dozens of others. A memorial service will be held at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary on January 8th, 2022 at 1pm where the sharing of these stories will absolutely be encouraged.
