Harry Masatani

1926 - 2025

Harry Yoshio Masatani, a resident of Guadalupe, California, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, at the age of 99.

Harry was born on August 21, 1926, and was the only child of Yoemon and Teruye Masatani. In 1922, Harry's father established the Masatani Market grocery store in Guadalupe. Harry grew up in the town, attending Guadalupe Joint Union School and Santa Maria High School.

During World War II, Harry and his parents were forced to leave their home and business. They were interned, along with other Japanese Americans, at the Amache Relocation Center in Colorado. Harry later spent time living in Chicago before serving in the United States Army. Harry met and married his wife, Kim, in Los Angeles, where they started a family before returning to Guadalupe. Harry and Kim had three children and became the second generation to own and operate Masatani Market, which served the community for over 100 years. In addition to running the store, Harry was an active community member. He served on the Guadalupe Planning Commission for fifteen years and on the Guadalupe School Board. He was a long-time member of American Legion Post 371.

Harry is preceded in death by his wife of almost 70 years, Kimiko Masatani, and his oldest son, Steven Masatani. Still living are his children, Brian (Tina) Masatani and Tina (Jerry) Mukai; grandchildren, Madisyn Masatani, Kelsey Masatani, Myles Masatani, Erin Mukai, and Connor Mukai; and great-grandchild, Stevie De La Torre. Harry also has an extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Everyone remembers Harry for always having a funny joke or an old story to share.

A memorial service will be held at a future date at the Guadalupe Buddhist Church, under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary. The Masatani family would like to express their appreciation for your support and condolences.
