Henry and I started out as neighbors. I moved into a house across the street from him in 2014. We didn´t actually meet untill the next spring and I think it was the day of his wife´s service which I believe was around Easte? but we were walking to the park my son and my mom and I and we stopped to talk and he told us of his wife Lois passing. Soon after I baked him a banana bread and brought it to him, and that was the start of our friendship! When I walked into his house to deliver the banana bread, I saw a picture hanging on his wall. I looked at the woman in the photo and said"hey I know her!" It was a photo of his stepdaughter, Sandy Simpkins, her and I had been great friends for a very long time until she had passed away. I thought it´s sort of serendipitous in a way that I move into this new beautiful house in a new area and across the street is a connection to another friend so it made it feel more like home. Henry quickly took to my son Clayton he treated us like family. He treated Clayton like a grandson. We had weekly phone conversations and weekly chats when I was outside working in my yard. Henry always was the first to know of anything going on in our neighborhood! We called him our neighborhood watch! He knew when people were coming or going and what was going on at each house because he cared for everybody deeply. He loved coming to watch my son play little league baseball. We couldn´t have been more blessed to have such a great friend in our lives. We are very thankful for the times we had with Henry when he was still smiling and his happy self. He always had news articles to give to me, jokes to tell, and a smile on his face. He will be missed very much by all!

Uncle Henry, I meant to tell you the last time we spoke how much I always enjoyed our political debates at Grandma´s and listening to your stories about growing up in Courtland during the Depression and World War II with Dad and Grandma. I hope you´re able to see Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, Merle, and Lois again. Rest in peace, Uncle Henry. You will always be remembered.

Henry was my good friend for many years. He was more than a friend he was more like a brother. We worked together for 13 years. We shared many stories at breakfast at the A street cafe where met every week for breakfast until it closed. I will always cherish our time together. May God bless you my friend.

I met Henry in 1965, when I went to work in the Assessors Office. We worked together for 30 years. We were both USAF vets, so we had a lot of war stories to tell each other! There was another interesting fellow working with us in the Assessors Office. His name was Gus Hargens and he was an Army vet. The three of us were having coffee at a cafe one morning and he told us this story. He was stationed in Hawaii in 1941 and he was transferred to a new post several months before Pearl Harbor. The new post was in California. He was the ranking sergeant when he arrived with his crew. He was the first soldier to pitch his tent at the new Army base, which was Camp Cook. He joined the Army in 1927 and told us he was in the Calvary. After he retired from the Army, he settled in Lompoc. Gus also said one of his bunk mates at Scofield Barracks was James Jones the famous author. After I retired in 1998 Henry and I got together for coffee or lunch quite often. Henry was the easiest guy to be with. Travel well Henry!

He was married to my great grandma Merle, I remember going to visit them in Santa Maria they had a beautiful home. They always doted on my siblings & I, when we would come visit or when they would travel up to Washington to see us. Grandpa always would hand us candy & money for us kids. My mom loved her grandfather, her enjoyed his life. He was a great person & grandpa. We will miss you grandpa Henry-

Henry was a true friend! (I don´t think he knew what an enemy was). He was a veteran, an Elk, county assessor and, above all, a friend to everyone he met!....he lived his life to the fullest! Henry´s mind was as sharp as a tack throughout his 94 years! He loved to tell jokes and always had a smile on his face. I´ve never met a more generous, more caring man than Henry. To say he will be missed is an understatement. He is at peace but we are all grieving for our loss. Thank you, Henry, for enriching our lives.

Henry was my great Grandpa and met my grandmother Lois before I was born. so he was the only grandpa I ever had. He was always fun the be around growing up. I was too young to race cars with my family so id go in the stands with him and my grandma, he always had candy in his pocket for me! I remember a trip to Disneyland that was so fun with our family. We drifted a part at the end for reasons out of my hands but I still always enjoyed his company and him as my grandpa. I wish we could have had more memories when I became older. I will miss you. Rest easy! <3

Henry was a kind hearted man that helped out everyone around him. He was in the Air Force and worked for the county for many years as an assessor. I'm his grandson, he ended up marrying my grandmother, Lois. They never missed any of my local races. They spent Sunday's watching NASCAR, cheering on Jeff Gordon. Henry was known for taking people under his wing. He supported many people over the years. He had a red Ford lightning Truck that he liked to talk about. He always took care of everything around him. Henry loved good conversation. He liked talking about what was happening in people's lives. He was a good listener, always taking an interest in what someone had going on. One of my personal greatest memories, was Henry and my grandmother Lois coming down after the races. They'd be carrying their lounge chairs and Henry would love to talk about the race. Honestly, I looked forward to seeing him on race nights. Even on nights that were bad, he sounded excited. He treated my grandmother Lois so good. He gave her some of her happiest memories. I enjoyed visiting them anytime we were in town. They had their wedding picture above the mantle, it was something they liked showing off. Every morning they sat at the table and had breakfast together. He never missed a birthday, even after my grandmother had passed. Cards were always in the mail for me and my daughters. My daughter Sunnie loved Henry very much. He was there the day she was born and she will have fond memories of him for the rest of her life. Those are memories of Henry I will never forget. He was a very good man. Rest in peace Henry, thank you for everything you did for us. Billy.

Didn´t know Henry that well but considered him a friend. Henry died at 94 so certainly he lived a long and storied life. Seems only right that someone write a few words about his life, his family, profession, travels and close friends. Always a soft spoken gentleman. Henry certainly touched some lives in his 94 years especially people who loved him. Vaya Con Dios Fair winds and following seas.
