Edward Jeffreys Obituary

WHITEHALL - Edward ""Ned"" Anthony Jeffreys died peacefully Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Granville, surrounded by his loving wife of 69 years and his family.
He was born March 1, 1921, in Whitehall to Minnie (Ross) Jeffreys and Frank Jeffreys, who was an immigrant from Palermo, Sicily.
Ned was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Joseph Jeffreys; and two sisters, Frances Grady and Helena Abbott.
He is survived by his sister Mary Walstrom.
Ned was a loving husband, father, grandfather, principal, teacher and coach. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Castleton State College and a master's degree in school administration from SUNY Plattsburgh.
Ned was employed by and retired from Hudson Falls Central School District, where he was an educator for more than 30 years. He also worked side-by-side with his sister Frances and brother Joseph at Roma Restaurant, a beloved family business on Route 4 in Whitehall.
He had a passion for sports that started in high school as a star quarterback and point guard on the varsity teams and continued throughout his life. He became a football coach at Hudson Falls High School, winning the Northern Conference as undefeated champions in 1959, then maintained his passion as an umpire in baseball, football and basketball.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a communicant of Our Lady of Angels and Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.
Ned married his high school sweetheart, Doris V. St. Clair, in November of 1943. They raised six children in their family home at 13 Park Ave. in Whitehall.
Ned spent many hours nurturing his flower and vegetable gardens. He enjoyed camping with the ""kids"" and Doris at Lake St. Catherine in Vermont and basking in the sun by the ocean in Hampton Beach, N.H.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed picnics (especially the Fourth of July), swimming and playing cards at the family camp on Hill Pond (Emerald Lake) in Hampton.
Ned is survived by his wife, Doris (St. Clair) Jeffreys; his six children and their spouses, Susan and Dan Mulholland, Doreen and Ellery Willett, Mary Jill and Joseph LaRocca, Ed Jeffreys and Eric Berns, Bill and Sue Jeffreys and Bob and Stacey Jeffreys; and 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Jeffrey Mulholland (Cathy), Martha Mulholland Bean, Clark and Derek Willett, Beau Hodges (Amy), Melissa, Anthony and Joseph LaRocca, Wagner and Ella Jeffreys-Berns, Drew and Mia Jeffreys and Sarah and Morgan Jeffreys. Ned was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, Anna, Larisa, Rodger, Luke, Matthew, Jacob, Kali, Emily and Chesney.
Friends and family may pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Jillson Funeral Home, 46 Williams St., Whitehall.
A burial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 9 Wheeler Ave., Whitehall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in Ned's honor to Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, 10421 State Route 40, Granville, NY 12832; or Skenesborough Rescue Squad, P O. Box 333, Whitehall, NY 12887.

On occasion I would go in to the Roma and say I was Bob Winn and Mary Layden's son and he would come out with multiple loaves of bread to take out as well as a huge hug and handshake. What a great man. Thank you Mr. Jeffrey's. Thoughts to Bill, Sue, family and Whitehall
