I have known "Aunt Jo" from stories told by my parents, and Wendy and Jimmy Whitford, and now have a few of my own, to a kind and truly down to earth woman, I honor your memory.

I have enjoyed visiting Jo for many years, discussing all the great issues as well as sharing pictures and stories of my family and of my kids and grandkids. She was a wonderful neighbor and a great lady. She will be missed immensely. My condolences to all of her family.

I Will Miss You - for Jo Whitford, by Sandy Burch

I have only fond memories of Grandma, Jo Whitford. My oldest memories come from the house on Marvin street. That house had a front porch and a back porch. The front porch was clean and presentable but we never spent any time out there, except to ring the doorbell. But the back porch was screened in with comfortable chairs and small tables. Grandma taught us how to play rummy on that porch.
It is like Grandma gave me a glimpse of a world that was not mine. I was a country kid, and yet I got to be a part of her world. She always dressed stylishly and her hair always looked perfect. My favorite presents from Grandma (I can't imagine Grandpa shopping for girl stuff) was the bottles of perfume. These fancy bottles allowed me a tiny entry into this other world of grown up fashion.
When I think of Grandma, I think of treats. She offered us things we were hardly ever allowed to eat at home: butterscotch hard candies from candy dishes in the living room, soda: 7-up and Orange Crush, and sometimes Pringles potato chips. After Christmas dinner we always had those mints that melt on your tongue and dates stuffed with peanut butter and rolled in powdered sugar. Most recently the treat has been cheesecake from the nuns at New Skete.
I will miss you Grandma. These June days are some of the longest days of the year with the most light, as summer begins to grow, with gardens really taking off. When I think of you now, what comes to mind is a bright red cardinal, a flash of beauty, taking flight. I am so glad I got to be a part of your life. I am sending you lots of love always.

I am so sorry to hear about Jo's passing. I worked with her for awhile at Espey's. What a great lady. I will miss her when I drive by the house. RIP
