Manindra Verma Obituary

Manindra K. Verma Manindra K. Verma of Railroad Place in Saratoga Springs, and a 35-year resident of Madison WI, died peacefully at home on Sunday May 1, 2011. He was born on January 31, 1931 in Motihari, India to the late Rajendra K. Verma and Nanda Rani Verma. He married his wife Sheela Prasad Verma on June, 4, 1956. Dr. Verma came to the US as a Fulbright Scholar and graduated with his PhD from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1964. As a Professor of Linguistics for the University of Wisconsin - Madison, he served both as the Chairman of Linguistics and as the Director of South Asian Studies at the University. Under his guidance the Annual Conference of South Asian Studies grew to international prominence. He is the notable author of several academic books and publications. Dr. Verma is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sheela Verma of Madison WI, a son, Sunjay Verma (Pinki) of Saratoga Springs, a daughter Mona Makhija (Anil) of Columbus, OH, four brothers, Sudhir and Jyotindra Verma of Mumbai India, Ravindra Varma of Hyderabad India, and Gajendra Verma of Ranchi India, a sister Manju Rani of Patna, India and four grandchildren, Sarina and Anika Verma, and Nishant and Nikhil Makhija. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm at Oakwood Cemetery 50 101st St. Troy, NY on Wednesday May 4, 2011. Memorial donations can be made in his memory to the University of Wisconsin Foundation/ MK Verma Scholarship Fund.
