Shirley Painter Obituary

Shirley Penk Painter May 19, 1952- March 27, 2015 MISSOULA, MT - Shirley passed away peacefully at home in Missoula, Montana on March 27th in the loving care of her family. Shirley is survived by her husband David, father James Dall, sisters Carol Crich and Ellen Drell, children Sarah Ozolins and son-in-law Peter, Meredith Penk and granddaughter Maia, Carl Penk and daughter-in-law Alanna, 3 step children and 5 beloved nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her mother Barbara Dall and first husband Carl “Skip” Penk. Born and raised in Elyria, Ohio; Shirley had the heart of a pioneer. She was an ardent seeker of a deeper meaning behind this adventure we call life. It was in that spirit that Shirley journeyed to Saratoga Springs with Skip Penk 40 years ago. Shirley was a member of Schuylerville Community Theater for many years, where she enjoyed performing in musicals. She loved to sing up to the last days of her life, and had a song for every occasion. Shirley was passionate about Waldorf education, and was involved with the Waldorf School of Saratoga from its very beginning to the present. She taught the Parent Child Program for several years, and the teachings of Rudolf Steiner influenced every aspect of her life. A deep spiritual yearning directed Shirley’s path. She was a devoted member of Bethesda Episcopal Church, where she met and married David Painter. This yearning also led her to the Gnostic teachings of Samael Aun Weor. There she found fulfillment, and the rest of her life was guided by her love for these teachings. It was for her commitment to Gnosis (and her pioneering spirit) that she and David ventured west, eventually settling in Montana where Shirley lived the last days of her beautiful life. She passed in peace, without fear or regret. Remembered for her candor, strength, deep faith and unwavering quest for grace; Shirley’s legacy lives on in her husband and children who continue to be inspired by the life she lived, and walk the path she led them to. Memorial donations may be made to the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs 122 Regent St, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

I would like to see an old drawing that she called the painter in 1981

It was a rare treat to meet up with Shirley on my trips to Saratoga over the years. With each visit we were able to jump right back in and on to our current situations. Shirley and I met in our 20's when we were both expecting our first child. We made a strong bond as we learnt about mothering, spirituality, education, relationships. Shirley was the first person to introduce me to Waldorf education which later became a focus of both our lives. Shirley was a great friend and inspiration. I was happy to hear Shirley's passing was such a special one and that so many of her loved ones were able to be near her. Peggy

We (her kids) were all with her for part or all of her long process. She decided she was ready, and never gave it a second thought. She felt she had paid a great debt in the difficulties she underwent, and we all felt in our hearts that she would be in store for great happiness. Mom was not sentimental (as anyone who knew her would most likely agree) and as her son I am deeply proud of the dignified and powerful way in which she passed, it was not racked with pain, memory and regret like so many. It was an honor to have been part of that process, and I hope that when my time comes I can face the great unknown as bravely. I Love you ma!

Shirley, a smile rarely left your face! You are an inspiration in the way you lived your life, your attitude, determination and warmth. One of the fond memories I have of you is from a lecture you gave in Gnosis at a retreat in the U.S. You had just become a Grandma and spoke (and showed pictures!) of the new addition to the family with great affection. God Bless.

I saw her love of children in those beautiful eyes and smile. So grateful my grandchildren were bathed in her light and grace through Waldorf.

I have never met a person who seemed more prepared for this transition, which is a credit to Shirley's spiritual and worldly life. This obituary deeply honours the spirit of Shirley who is still singing for us, and so we are Blessed. Much love to the Penk Painter Family.
