STERLING – Esther Mullen, age 89, died Monday, November 24, 2025 at CGH Medical Center, Sterling.
Esther was born on January 29, 1936 in Sterling the daughter of Carl and Margaret (Lauber) Vock. She was a graduate of Newman Catholic High School in 1954, graduate of Radiology class of 1956 at St. Anthony Hospital School in Rockford. Esther married Thomas H. Mullen, Jr. on June 24, 1958 in Sterling. He preceded her in death on May 27, 2003. Esther and Tom lived their life for 45 years in Sterling, Tom retired from Northwestern Steel & Wire after 35 years. She was a devout and loving wife, mother and friend to many. Esther was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sterling.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Mullen of Sterling; two sons, Thomas (Darla) Mullen of Apple Valley, CA and Joe (Christine) Mullen of Sterling; one sister, Alice Reed of Sterling; one brother, Bob (Phyllis) Vock of Shannon; six grandchildren; one great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Susan Taylor; one grandson, Christopher James Mullen.
Visitation will be from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM with Reverend Thomas Doyle officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Sterling.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Sacred Heart Church.
